Title: The ATM
Post by maryl on May 31st, 2003, 3:54pm
The bank where Elmer and Pearl live just got a shiny, new ATM machine. So, they decided they had to get one of them-there cards so they could get their money any time--even on Sunday-going-to-Church day.

But, when the manager said pick a 7-digit number that you won't forget, and don't use your birthday, etc. they had a problem. They were not good at remembering stuff. What to do! What to do! Then the light came on!

Elmer picked 1058421.
Pearl picked 6060247.

They exchange information on how they would remember their numbers.

Pearl said, "That's a real handy number, Elmer. But I think mine is more timely."

Can you figure out what they were using for a memory jog?

I got it..... or i'm just making it up, but either way it works... here goes: [hide] Elmer's number was "handy" so this refers to the hands and digits of the fingers... let's start of with the whole number:

1058421....... okay first things first

1) the 10 stands for 10 fingers in total
2) the 5 stands for there are five fingers on each hand and moving on...
3) the 8 stands for how many fingers (minus the thumbs becuase some may argue that thumbs are not fingers) and following the pattern...
4) the 4 is how many fingers (no thumbs) are on each hand... now...
5) the 2 is how many thumbs you have and finally...
6) the 1 is how many thumbs u have on each hand...

So basically it goes total digits, then digits per hand, then total "fingers" then fingers per hand, then total thumbs, then thumbs per hand...

NEXT, Pearl said that his number was TIMELY refering to the times of the day.... I'll start out with the whole number and break it down:

6060247 is the number......

1) there are 60 seconds in a minute....
2) there are 60 minutes in an hour
3) there are 24 hours in a day
4) and there are 7 days in a week...

So basically moving up from seconds to weeks..... got it? am i right? [/hide]
