Title: Elevator question.
Post by turtler7 on Sep 13th, 2003, 6:23am
There is a lady that lives on the 30th floor of a building.  Every day after she gets back from work she goes into the elevator.  If it is raining she goes straight up to the 30th floor.  If it is not raining she goes to the 27th and walks the next 3 stories.  She does not need nor want the exersise.  She does not stop to talk or say hi to people.  There are no windows or open areas to admire the weather.  So why does she do this?

Unless you have changed the answer, this is a very familiar riddle.

Yes - there is a version of it already in one of the forums. But this version is better IMO, so I won't link.

I must say, though, that the lady is not very bright.

Does this strange habit of this lady have anything to do with her job?
And are the numbers important or would it be the same with 37 and 42 storeys?

Sometimes I wish I was better at putting myself in a not very bright person's position. ::)

No.
Yes, and probably.

About relating to the job. I first heard this riddle when I was a kid, and the information given included that the person, a man at the time, worked at the circus. This was in pre-politically correct times when it was thought that people of this stature could only find work in circuses.

Aha! So the lady is probably a [hide]little shorter than usual (a dwarf, midget, pygmy, runt, whichever non-politically correct term you like best or least)[/hide] and therefore [hide]can't reach the button for the 30th floor, only the one for the 27th[/hide]. If it's raining, however, she [hide]carries an umbrella and uses it to press the higher button[/hide].

id agree with wowbagger except that maybe if it was raining, [hide] there might be an elevator operator instead of an umbrella [/hide]

Why would there be an elevator operator only when it was raining ???

Maybe it's to avoid insurance claims: the soggy lift users may electrocute themselves on the buttons?

::[hide] The lady is a midget and she cant reach the high buttons by herself so she has to walk for the next three floors..when its raining she has an umbrella so she can reach the buttons![/hide]

But why doesn't she always carry something so she can push the button everyday?  ???
