Jim and Jack lived together in a cottage. One day Jim went to work and Jack stayed at home. When Jim got back, he found Jack dead, a puddle of water on the floor and a lot of broken glass. Explain it!

jack was killed by a woman who was in love with jim and she hated jack. the women then spread some water around and broke glass to make it look as if " jack was a goldfish and his bowl was kept on a block of ice which melted " ::)

T&B, you answer isn't complete. And block of ice really doesn't fit in the story. You didn't say why did they die.

There are all sorts of reasons for why the bowl broke. Maybe there was an earthquake. Maybe some kid hit a baseball through the window, also taking out the bowl (the first version of this that I ever heard had a baseball among the things lying on the floor). Maybe Jack went insane and bumping one side of the bowl until it toppled. Maybe Jim slammed the door on his way out in the morning, causing the shelf on which the bowl sat to collapse. Maybe a freak extraodinarily unlikely quantum event lead to every particle in the table below the bowl tunnelling to another location all at the same time. The bowl fell through the resulting hole. May Jack angered the god of goldfish and was smited.

If that was the case and it was strong enough to knock down the bowl there was probably a hell of a lot more stuff on the floor as well. I think this riddle was easier for Californians.

But why did he go crazy? Only one explanation is possible - some loony put an ice cube in his bowl!!!

Actually, I've really been wondering whether it would be possible for a fish, the same density as the water in the bowl, to knock the bowl over. And if so, how could it be done?

My friend had two fish named Lilly and Tilly. One day she gave them a lot of food because she forgot to feed them the day before. Well, Lilly ate all the food (poor Tilly, she was hungry too) and died! She ate too much. She turned upside down and Tilly started bumping Lilly like "wake up, wake up!"
Tamara got crazy and threw Lilly and Tilly into the toilet. :'(

Ok, aero_guy, maybe Jim was poor and he had only Jack? He slept on the floor and... Ok, this is nuts.

Maybe not a fish, but in principle I think it could be done.. The 'fish' could sit at one side and create a wave, and every time the wave reflects at his side add some energy and raise its amplitude, untill the wave is powerfull enough to knock the bowl over..

Alternatives...

(i) Jack was drinking a glass of water and had a heart attack, the glass dropped, smashed, the water spilled on the floor, and Jack died.

(ii) Jack was feeding the fish in a large aquarium and a tiny flaw in the glass finally gave way. The water flooded out and knocked Jack off his feet. As he fell to the ground he struck his head on a hard surface and was killed.
