Joe has a skin condition and needs the umbrella to keep direct sunlight off of him. I used to know a woman with this problem.

That would be using the umbrella as a parasol..

Maybe he uses it for protection (there's shop somewhere in England where you can custom made umbrellas with all sorts of gadgets in them, though they've stopped putting hidden swords in, since that got people killed)

Three guesses, with two subguesses on the first.

1) Joe is a weatherman.

a) He knows it will rain before he heads back home, so he carrys one to be prepared.

b) Joe is also a lousy weatherman.  He predicted rain for that day, even though every other weatherman laughed and predicted sunshine.  Being obstinant, Joe still carrys that fool umbrella with him.  Those who see him pity him, for he simply cannot admit it when he is wrong.

~~~~
2) Joe sells umbrellas, and he is showing off his wares.
~~~~~

3) Joe is moving.  He has ALL of his worldly goods with him.

A few ideas for Joe and his umbrella…

  • Joe is crazy...  :o

  • Joe’s surname is Poppins, his mother is Mary...

  • Joe is going to a dancing performance with Gene Kelly...

  • Joe uses it to beat off street urchins begging for coppers...

  • Joe is a street urchin and stole the umbrella to sell for a loaf of stale bread...

  • Joe is going to feed the pigeons in the park, or walk on the coast... (beware of overhead seagulls!)

  • Joe is a kid and intends to float the umbrella ‘upside down’ down the river...

  • Joe is returning the umbrella to someone...

  • Joe is returning home with the umbrella from someone’s...

  • Joe lives in the same town as I do… “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes!”

...the, the, the, tha, that's all folks!  ;D

Darn, because if Joe wasn't human, he would have to take his umbrella with him if he was a jellyfish

;)

Is Joe an insurance salesman, and the umbrella his coverage plan?

Can you tell I'm on a thin line here?

Or maybe Joe is... is he a performing entertainer who rides a unicycle on a tight wire and uses the umbrella as a balancing prop?

Did Joe break or lose his cane, so is using the umbrella for a walking stick?

Boy, I thought I was on the right track, but no luck. Anyway, I figured that umbrella meant "Shadow" in French or Italian or something. But, as close as I could get was Ombra. But, there are several other languages in which it might work. So, I figured that Joe was out in the sun with his shadow. But, that did not work for the languages that I can check.  :-[

So, I figure it is for latin. Is Joe's real name Josuphusicus?

Wait. Is Joe's dog named Umbrella? ? ? Here boy, good boy.

Hmmn, I like the dog answer... but I just drug another possibility from the depths of my brain.

Umbrella, my precious...

Joe has umbrella envy.

Joe is taking his umbrella to get it repaired.

I just had a thought about this one...

Is joe, perhaps, [hide] drinking a tropical beverage, perhaps out of a coconut shell [/hide], which would explain the umbrella?

Is he is about to go to Seattle?
Or did it just rain?

Joe always keeps an umbrella in his car.  Or at his office.  Yesterday, it was raining, so he took it back home.

Or Joe IS an umbrella and Umbrella is the name of the owner.  You have never seen an umbrella go out by itself, have you?
