Maybe he knows he is bankrupt for quite a while already, he had to sell his house and ends up in a cheap hotel.
Or does he learn at that very moment that he's bankrupt?

Maybe he owns the hotel and it is burning?
Maybe he hears the stock market news on radio?
Maybe he owns WTC and it is one day of september 2001.

The man is playing Monopoly. He is using the car piece. He lands on a spot with a hotel on it, and does not have enough to pay, so he is declared bankrupt.
