Title: Reflection 3
Post by Iceman on Nov 22nd, 2006, 9:17am
A week after the 1st Reflection riddle, Tom and John meet in the street. Tom offers an apology, saying that he bumped into him. He also says that he was in the neighborhood and that he wanted to pay him a visit. So here they are, chatting in John's living room, and then Tom says: 'How about another bet? I will not write anything, as the bet has nothing to do with writing, so you can relax. But I noticed that you are not a make-up man, unlike me. There are no mirrors in your bedroom and I don't have a mirror on me either. We will go straight to the bedroom from here, where I will see clearly my reflection. If so, you owe me 50 bucks. One more thing. I will ask you to do one simplest thing for me inside the bedroom and you must comply. So, what do you think?' John thinks about it for a minute and then says: 'You're on!' What happened soon after is that John lost the bet. What did Tom asked him to do?

No, sometimes I am left.

I get it now.. It took me a while.  :-[ Interesting approach, but it looks to me that one thing is missing, that is, Tom seeing his reflection in there. If this looks like hair splitting to you, then let your answer be the winner.  8) The intended answer is out there, so get on it riddlers. 8)

It's possible to (literally) see yourself in the reflection in someones eyes. Not sure if that's clear enough though.

Post by Iceman on Nov 23rd, 2006, 9:18am
No. Not clear enough.

They can leave the bedroom only after the bet, so no.

well then Tom asks him to write "my reflection" somewhere in the bedroom  ;)

Nope. The bet has nothing to do with writing.  ;)

Tom asks him to get his pensieve out of the closet. When he does, Tom puts his memory of looking in the mirror this morning into it and sees his reflection.

He asked him to hold a knife up as if he were going to stab him, and in the knife, saw his reflection. Wrong, right?

This is the answer for the [hide]Dessert [/hide]riddle.  :o Best thing to do is to post it there.  ;)

Tom asked him to open the curtains?

Is this why John is always borrowing from Mark?  To pay Tom for these silly bets?

Is there anything reflective in the house?

Yes.

The clue: [hide]A certain little part of the riddle that sounds unimportant, it is, actually, very important. [/hide]  ;)

"In a straight line".  It is a straight line from where he is to the bedroom.  If he places a mirror right where he is standing, he can see himself from the bedroom.  He kindly asks his friend to hold the mirror.

a week. like, 7 days. Does it have to be a week.

I'm trying to figure out what seemingly small detail is actually important. So, I looked through, and that was the only thing that didn't seem important, but maybe could be for some reason.

Title: Re: Reflection 3: the final reflection

No. That part of the riddle is not important.

But then his friend would ask, "but how can you see your own reflection when it is clear?"  And he would not pay the money because John is lying.

My guess is [hide]Tom own's the house, therefore it must be the master bedroom, and the master bedroom is attached to a bathroom.  John asks Tom to open the bathroom door, and he sees the mirror.[/hide]  I'm guessing this is too obvious though, and Tom wouldn't have agreed since he knew about the bathroom, so this is probably wrong.

I was about to post the same answer. Tom is stupid, as has been demonstrated in the preceding Tom & John riddles, so he isn't going to realize that John can just ask him to [hide]open a door to a room with a mirror.[/hide]

[hide]Suppose it's night time and dark outside. That's probably why Tom apologised seeing as it was getting late.[/hide]

[hide]Tom asks John to open the curtain to the bedroom window (all bedrooms have windows).  Since it's dark outside and because of the bedroom light is on, Tom would crearly see his reflection in the window.
In Reflection 1, John says he will not look at his reflection in the window. There is no such restriction in this puzzle.[/hide]

Edit: I just noticed honkyBoy's solution is the same so it seems this isn't the answer.

Are we going to get an answer to this one?

How about some questions:

Did either of them leave the bedroom after they entered?
Did either of them bring any objects with them or have them concealed on them?
Are these objects reflective? Are they important?
Did he ask him to move something in the room?

No, don't say it yet.

Could Tom have won the bet without the extra condition that John do the one thing he said?

Did Tom see his reflection in the shiny object?

Did Tom ask John to show him the object, or to let him hold it or look at it?

Was it Tom who had the object?

Did Tom know the object would be there before he made the bet?

To be honest, I pretty much forgot the answer. But, IF I do remember correctly, and it is coming back to me now, I reckon you hit the nail right on the head! Yes, I think so.

Or mayhap [hide]it was his portrait on the wall which, evidently, has a reflection, although somewhat delayed.  [/hide]
