Title: The Cliff
Post by alien2 on Sep 24th, 2013, 5:10am

A sturdy pilot is in a helicopter that has electrical shorts. He grabs the 30 m long rope, opens the door and jumps on the flat top of a cliff. The helicopter crashes on the ground and explodes. He stands up a bit sore and observes the secluded cliff, which is 40 m tall, upright, cylindrical and wide. There are two horizontal and 1 m long pieces of rock, which resemble the limb of a tree. One piece sticks out at the top and the other is 9 m right below it. To climb down w/o rope is impossible because the cliff is smooth all over. He possesses a simple climbing skill only, as one time he made his way up the rope with his boots acting like a clamp. The only knots he knows how to make are the overhand knot and the two half-hitches. He is wearing jeans, T-shirt and boots. There are no unmentioned objects at his disposal. Nobody knows about his predicament while he is roasting under the scorching sun. A river that attracts him is flowing along about a mile away. Is there the least risky way to get to the earthen bottom or should he wait for help?

[hide]Couldn't he just throw the rope over the top 1 meter rock so both ends of the rope are hanging 15 meters down from it. He could then climb down from the top one to the one below it. Pull down the rope and tie it to the second 1 meter rock. Then slide down the rope and he could probably reach the ground from the bottom of the rope. [/hide]

I suppose that is feasible. He could make something like [hide]tress[/hide] out of the rope to make the descent easier.
