Title: Soulmates
Post by alien2 on Sep 30th, 2013, 5:20am
There are two identical twin brothers, one single and one married. The single one is staying with the married couple for a week. The twins decide to be identical in appearance in all respects during the week, wearing the same clothes, having the same haircut etc. And so sometimes they like to pretend to be the other one, although rarely in the house. The wife goes in the evening to visit her feeble mother and she sleeps over. No changes whatsoever are made to the house in her absence, as the twins spend most of the time outdoors. The wife returns tomorrow in the evening and approaches the threshold of her home, without a clue which twin is in the house, if any. She opens the front door and enters. The door, which doesn't suggest any clue, opens directly into the living room, where one of the twins is behind a wall. He is completely out of her sight. There are no other living beings and no sounds, smells or objects could give him away, as everything is exactly like when she left yesterday. Upon entering the house, she knows that her husband is home. How?

[hide]The smell of cigarette which only her husband smoked[/hide] OR

[hide]The smell of some special dish which she knew only her husband could prepare.[/hide] OR

[hide]Footprint with the thumb missing.[/hide]

Your guesses regarding smells are not good enough because he could've smoked the cigarette and then left the house recently for this or that reason. Still, I modified the riddle just to be on the safe side by adding that no smells could give him away. Your guess regarding [hide]the footprint[/hide] is a lot better. However, since they look identical in all respects, that can't be the answer. But if one twin has [hide]the habit to walk barefooted in the house and his footprints lead to above wall[/hide], then your answer might pass as an alternative one. The intended answer has nothing to do with [hide]footprints[/hide].

When you say identical in all respects, do you mean only physically or in other ways as well? For example, did they share the same hobbies or watched the same TV shows?

Meanwhile, one more guess:

[hide]She somehow spotted the wedding ring in her husband's shadow.[/hide]

They are identical physically. I wasn't clear enough on that point in my previous reply.

You have practically reached the solution in the wording that differs from mine. So, what kind of an [hide]artist[/hide] is her husband? ;)

[hide]A painter?[/hide]

That could work. I was thinking [hide]a shadowgraphist.[/hide] The way the riddle is worded, it has alternative answers. That's not good. :-[
