Title: Jealousy
Post by alien2 on Jan 12th, 2014, 11:28am
Tom returns home from work. In a little while his girlfriend Cynthia enters the apartment. He has no idea where she has been. Cynthia greets him and says that she didn't see nobody but him today, because Tom tends to be jealous (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY1RJ585Fvk). Since he knows that Cynthia always tells the truth, he smiles and says: I have a temporary total loss of the sense of smell, so I can't smell you, but I can kiss you. He then passionately kisses her eyebrow, which is something he likes to do. At that moment, Tom correctly concludes where Cynthia has been. Where has she been?

[hide]She went and got an eyebrow-piercing[/hide]

Her statement means that she didn't see [hide]the piercing man[/hide] or anybody else for that matter.

That's a good point. And I don't think they've invented robots to do that intentionally yet. Oh well..

My original thought was similar to towr's. I thought that she stopped [hide]wearing glasses[/hide] which normally would make kissing an eyebrow next to impossible to do. But then I concluded that he could have just Seen that. As well as [hide]piercing[/hide].

Conclusion. Since all the other senses are eliminated the clue (logically at least) must be [hide]tactile[/hide] unless eyebrows can sing.

He is blind.  Only by kissing her could he notice the bandages on her eyes.  She went for an eye operation.

And since she has bandages on the eyes, she could have done many things without seeing anybody.

Well, if she still had the bandages on her eyes, how was she able to see Tom?

If he is permanently blind and she is temporarily how did they both drive/get home? Doesn't matter.

They talk to each other. They can hear. They use echolocation.

(Edit: according to alien2 "she didn't see [hide]the piercing man[/hide] or anybody else for that matter". "Anybody" surely includes Tom.)

All I meant to say was that she saw Tom and nobody else.

No winner yet. I commend your imagination.

OK then. Just to put everyone on the same page (here goes my English again). Are we to interpret "seeing someone" optically as in "physical processing of still and/or moving imagery" or personally and locationally as in "being with someone, same place same time"? From previous comments it follows - optically. Cynthia can see. She has at least one functioning eye. While she was not in Tom's apartment she has seen no one. Her eyebrow picked up a clue.

Tom can't make it out visually but he can by touch and by touch only. What kind of clue can it be?

The only thing that comes to mind is someone's temperature. You can't really see it. But usually you put your lips to someone's forehead to gauge the temperature, not the eyebrow.

The eyebrows could taste salty.  She went to the sea.

Summary: Elimination approach worked. Find all the possibilities. Keep eliminating them while it can be done. The answer is within whatever is left.

As usual, what is left is what is right.
