Title: A structure fire
Post by alien2 on Sep 12th, 2015, 9:57am

Tanisha and Jonathan are living in a house as an average married couple that gets along. She is a full-time babysitter for two weeks to earn some decent money. He is rather busy as well working as a bank clerk. If there wasn’t an accidental fire in the house one week after her departure, which damaged a cheap desk only, Tanisha would be very disappointed and angry at her husband upon her return. Why? Fill in the omitted parts.

The clue: What was [hide]the one thing Tanisha asked of Jonathan to do in her absence[/hide]?

She asked [hide] for god's sake, get rid of that old desk [/hide].

Although your answer is witty, rather simple but also a bit silly, the desk is totally unimportant regarding the intended answer for this rather hard riddle with omitted parts.

[hide]remove the iron from the socket? The iron was on that cheap desk. Probably at some point that started a small fire[/hide]

I don't follow.

This time I'm looking for the expected answer only.

A few more clues: The [hide]time the fire started[/hide] is important, during the mentioned two weeks [hide]Jonathan completely forgot to do what Tanisha asked of him[/hide] and [hide]technology[/hide] is involved.

[hide]She always tested the fire alarms once a week. She decided to test them upon leaving and returning, and she simply asked him to test them about a week after her departure.[/hide]

Although [hide]fire alarm[/hide] is part of the solution it is not that important for the riddle. More is involved. You’re on the right track though.

[hide]She had asked him to call her at 6 in the morning. Jonathan was a late riser and had forgotten to set the alarm. But the fire alarm woke him up.[/hide]

This time you're not even close perhaps because of my clumsy clue. Forget about the [hide]fire alarm even though it went off. Fire alarm wasn't the only technology that had a role in the riddle.[/hide].

They had a wild night before departure.  She forgot to remove some handcuffs, leaving him attached to the bed.

He would have died of thirst if not for the accidental fire due to the stockings left on the lamp.  The fire triggered the sprinkler, and Jonathan could collect enough water in his latex suit to survive until her return.

Man, you have a twisted mind!

Although your answer is kinky it is real good and it can pass as an alternative one. You are very close to the expected answer where the couple is [hide]rather conservative and they didn’t have a wild night.[/hide]

Wait a minute.. What did she ask him to do during her absence?

This relates to the intended answer which is in the same vein. Any ideas?

[hide]She had asked him to water the houseplant. Fortunately for him, the sprinklers did the job.[/hide]

Your answer is correct.

Hmmm... I don't know Tanisha, I don't know the women you know, but...
[hide]... the women I know in "an average married couple" would be very disappointed and angry if they found the appartment, the furniture, everything soaked in water when she returns from a trip.

Or it must have happened in the greenhouse.

You have a point. I guess I lost sight of that because I was more focused on [hide]the plants than the furniture[/hide].

So, the most plausible answer award goes to Grimbal's Oct. 13 post.

Someone should make a movie of this. Alien, concede the answer to Grimbal.

Grimbal is the winner.

The intended answer might pass but only if one revises the riddle.
