Title: Magical Rotating Photo Cube
Post by alien2 on Oct 7th, 2016, 2:53am
Albert and Stephen have an IQ of 140. Albert has a rotating frame with six non-transparent photos inserted. Stephen is a guest at Albert’s house. He takes a look at a wall with 10 pictures of Albert’s cat. He then notices the cube with no prior knowledge whatsoever about it. He takes a glance at its six cat photos. He knows without a shadow of a doubt behind which photo of Albert’s cat is battery slot. But how?

[hide]Albert has arranged the cat pictures on the wall in some code that is familiar to Stephen, or that Stephen has worked out.  He then can decipher the meaning of the pictures on the cube as well.[/hide]

The intended answer is a lot less complicated. I think. To be honest, I have doubts about its validity.

[hide]Albert put the cat picture in upside down.[/hide]

Not bad. Though that is irrelevant regarding the intended answer.

Stephen immediately recognize Erwin's(*) cat.

The pictures are opaque.
So the battery cannot be observed.
So its location is in a superposition of all possible positions ... or could be ... maybe.  Anyway.
So it is behind all pictures at the same time.
And at the same time it's not.

For Stephen(*) and Albert(*) that's the way the world works.

* Erwin Schrödinger, Stephen Hawkins, Albert Einstein.

Meh. The intended answer is plausible but it isn't fantastic. Still, Einstein is the clue, that is, if you know a lot about him or at least watched a certain Jeff Goldblum movie.

The one where he plants a virus in your spaceship?

Anyway, if it's a cube, and the battery is inside, it is behind all the pictures, isn't it?

No and no. Darn mosquitoes are still biting. I'm looking forward to flies. They're annoying too but at least they don't bite me.

I presume you are referring to [hide]Jeff Goldblum's movie "The Fly"[/hide]?

Separately.

To his, technically, tomcat named "Tiger", Albert, according to the bottom of page 414, once said:

- I know what's wrong, dear fellow, but I don't know how to turn it off.
