Tom knocks seven times on a door of an apartment. Goodhearted Jack who likes visitors opens the door to see who it is. Yet, even though Tom is behaving friendly and both are in topnotch health and in good mood, Jack does not invite him in, even though he likes him. Why not?

I forgot to mention (duh!) that Jack soon closes the door (thus staying in his home).

But postman always rings/knocks twice. Mayhap you were secretly referring to the cops? For those unaware 'cops' is a term that originates from copper badges sheriffs used to wear in the Wild West.

Because Tom knocks not on Jack's door but on someone else's? Out of curiosity Jack, being a good neighbour, opens his own door - to see what the commotion is all about.

There is a flaw in your logic. The riddle clearly states... that Jack likes Tom. Ergo, it is reasonable to conclude, having in mind an ancient curse of emancipation: 'Women have no reason', that Jack IS a [hide]cat person [/hide]. Thank you everybody and good night. And tell William to fix my tags. I'm tired of copying/pasting all the time.
