Monitor Not Responding

Hey guys.  I got my RMAed Motherboard and Video Card back, it was pretty cool cause they gave me evrything brand new: boxes, cords, cds, books, etc...I had my friend stay at my house while I went to the dentist and he put my parts in.  He calls me to tell me everything is in and he is starting the reformat and everything looks good, but he had a little trouble getting the monitor up, but after messing with the monitor plug in the back, he got it working.

When I got home, my monitor was black, the light next to the power button was just flashing on and off.  Ussually when this happens it is just that my monitor plug is upside down or not in. I restarted my computer and it still didnt work.  Here are the things I have done and it still has not worked:
Reset the CMOS
Unplugged all the power from the motherboard and reset the CMOS
I have 2 VGA adapters (I had an extra one), then I have 2 places on my video card where you can plug in your monitor.  I have tried both the adapters, on both the plug ins on the card, with the monitor cable upsidedown, and right side up.  Point is, Ive tried every combination to plug in the monitor.
Ive checked the power to my video card.
Ive used the power cord that came with my video card for power.
I switched the memory sticks.
Ive tried with one memory stick.
I figured what the hell and unplugged my drives.
Ive taken out and put back in my video card.
I tried it on another monitor, and it still did not work, so that cancells the possibility of it being a monitor problem.

I really cannot think of anything else to do, I got my RMAs back and they are brand new.  What else could of gone wrong?  I have a new power supply to support the power my X1800XT, and AN8 Motherboard need.

To those of you who have read all of this, thanks so much.  All these new comptuer parts have really taken me to the edge and Im gonna loose it.  My old parts are good, but barely get me by in gaming.  I didnt spend over 800 dollars for this to happen. I dont understand how it was fine when my friend left, then when the reformat was done it restarts and is suppose to go to the install for widnows. But it looks like it just restarted and went black, I wasnt home to see.  Well thanks.

My computer also got a similar problem.Till the previous day night its working fine.
The next day morning when i switched it on..the monitor light is blinking..
I took the cpu to my friends pc and connected..and his monitor too blink..so i think monitor is not a problem.
I didnt add any extra power supply..but i just added a new harddisk.Even if i want to install a os again..the display is not coming..

If you added a new harddisk, it's possible your current powersupply doesn't have enough power to supply all the devices.
You can try taking the new disk out, and seeing if it'll start again then. Or borrow a stronger power supply somewhere to test if that'll make it work (I wouldn't outright buy a new powersupply, because it might still be another problem. If you're in very bad luck, your motherboard might even be dead)

But even after adding the new harddisk...it worked for about a month..then the problem came..i am thinking that the problem might be with motherboard or ram...anyway to test them?

It'd be difficult. You could try putting the ram in someone else computer to test. However, a computer should at least start booting without ram, even though the OS probably won't load.
The motherboard is much harder to test. First thing you can try is disconnecting any devices that aren't necessary for booting, if any of them is broken it could make the system as a whole unstable.
I'd just go to a repairshop though. It's a lot of hastle to find it out yourself. And if you're not carefull you might break things.

When you say took your CPU to another friend's house do you mean you took your whole computer?  You can't just plunk a CPU onto any motherboard and expect it to work.  And your problem could still be a power supply failure.  Even if the computer still worked for a month, you could have been overworking your power supply.  This will be easier to figure out if we have some more information.

When you hit the power button, does the computer still respond?  Can you hear the fans and disks spinning up or is there no response at all?  Does your computer produce any beeps?

Also, give us some information about your computer.  Detailed specs are not necessary, but we will need to know if you have a video card or on-board video, how many RAM modules you have, etc.  If you can provide more detailed specs, please do.  They will be helpful in assessing PSU problems.

If you can provide enough information, I can probably debug you from here.  Then, if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, you can go see a repair specialist and have them replace any faulty parts.

Hi,
I took my box to my friend house and tested and in his monitor display is not coming.
I think there is no problem with monitor.

Basically i have 3 ram slots..and i have 3 rams of 256,128,128 each. When i switch on my computer the fans are working fine..computer doesnt produce any beeps..i dont have a onboard video card..i am having nvidia graphics card(Riva tnt2). Processor - 1.6 GHZ.

Previously from about 2-3 months the smps fan doesnt run properly..it makes some sound..and it runs very slowly..

I feel the problem might be with graphics card or mother board. And one more thing..when the computer first starts the harddisk(red light) is coming up but later on its not coming at all.I mean for the first 5-10 seconds..If its a graphics card problem atleast harddisk should be accessed while loading OS.I recently bought a harddisk of 80 GB and it was working fine.

Please help me solve the problem.

Well, you can test whether it's the videocard by borrowing another one from a friend and try it with that one.
Aside from that, well, we're really not a technical support forum.

Unfortunately, questions about computers of this age are usually answered with a "You know what you need to do?  Get a new computer." or similar response on tech forums.

I'm leaning more towards PSU now.  The only other likely scenario would be a RAM problem.  If you feel comfortable pulling apart your computer, it's really not very difficult to check.

First unplug your computer from the wall and your monitor from the back of the computer.  Open the case (this should only entail removing a screw or two) and locate your RAM modules.  To remove a stick of RAM, press the tabs on each end of the mounting slot until the module pops out.  First, remove all three RAM modules.  Then, without replacing any, plug your computer back into the wall.  Press the power button.  If you hear a series of beeps, that's good.  This means your motherboard is at least in working shape.  If you don't hear anything, your motherboard is fried.

If you heard a series of beeps, begin by replacing the two paired RAM modules in the computer, one in the DIMM 0 slot and one in the DIMM 1 slot.  Try powering your computer on with only these two.  If this works, you could attempt to use the 256 stick in the DIMM 2 slot later, but if it causes an error like the one you had earlier, remove it.

As a side note, some of your components are at least seven years old (your GPU caught my attention).  Most components are only designed to last 5-7 years so a complete failure of the video card might not be out of the question.  In addition, an old motherboard might have trouble supporting a relatively new HD.

Post back once you've tried all this.

I love computers...it could be so many things. It's been over a month since your last post--have you got it fixed yet?

What version of Windows are you using? Could it be drivers for the video card not being recognized by Windoze?

There is a way to test your RAM...a little techie, but free. http://www.memtest86.com/

It could also be the monitor plug, or the slot the video card is in--is it a PCI or AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port)--if it's PCI you could try a different slot.

The best way to figure something like this out is one component at a time...so try to get it to work with old parts and replace with new parts one at a time until it fails.

Good luck.

P.S. Admittedly this is not a computer tech forum, but fixing computers definitely falls into the category of enigmatic riddles...IMO
