Title: Annoying Error Message
Post by JiNbOtAk on Aug 24th, 2007, 6:37pm
I'm having a problem with my notebook. When I started to use it, I used Norton as my antivirus. However, once they started to request payment for updates, I stop updating ( hey, its the company's notebook, and they didn't instruct us to update  ;) ).

Anyway, after sometime, I suspected there might be a virus in the system, so I uninstalled Norton, and download and install AVG. Voila, AVG detected 4 viruses in the first scan alone. The files are healed, so no problem there.

My problem started after that. Now, everytime I log in into windows, there this annoying error message that informs me the infected file is missing. ( It would seem the antivirus attached itself to the startup part ) Each time I'm logged in, the error message comes popping up. Its starting to be annoying. And one more thing, the windows search function went missing too.

Any suggestions to solve this ? ( Short of reformatting my hard drive )

You probably corrupted a system file or deleted it or most likely the virus is still around. Try running anti spyware as well.. sorry this is going to be a hell lot of work to get it up and running again... come to think of it doesn't your company have a IT department that can look at this?

I guess it's something like that, maybe the registry got corrupted or something. Isn't there any painless way to remedy this ? ( Operation wise, my notebook is still functioning ok, its just annoying not to have a search function )

And Sameer, I'm sorry to say we don't have an IT department here. What can I say, some of us here is still old fashioned.  :P ( My delivery guy still write out all the outgoing DOs )

Did you quarantine your virus files or delete them? I guess if your registry is corrupt not much you can do about it, unless you have a backup. If you have system restore on, you can try using it.. remember to backup your useful stuff before that.. Also try Spyboat S&D as well as Ad Aware to clean your spyware.. if you had viruses i can guarantee you have spyware. Maybe you can snap shot the error message? Do you remember the name of the viruses detected by AVG?

I found this:

Also I highly recommend running anti virus everyday, and anti spyware (those two that I mentioned above) everyday. Use firefox/firefox addons to minimize your infection. Set your internet security level to a higher one!! And watch where you surf!! If you don't have a firewall, install one!!

Having multiple firewalls is not same as having multiple locks on your door... they might end up interfering with each other and your system might become unstable.. just use one good one!!

Yes that often happens, except for when I am running on different users and depends on what program I am using. I turn off the unnecessary one's and turn on the others.
