Its whole body...

I have two riddles:

Its whole body is its mouth.
What is it?

And this old one:

In seven there are five of us
in six there's only three,
And in nine we become four,
Can you guess what are we?

OK, the second one took about a second and a half, but if someone else want to post the answer I will  let her.

In my case, the second one literally took me two attempts. (Sometimes it's better not to think too hard and try again later.)

I am ok with the second one.

My answer to the first one is rather literal, but maybe its amoeba Grin

Or maybe its a door

Nobody has given the correct answer to the first riddle..

Here's some hints:

1. Once any of its food sources are depleted, it dies almost immediately

2. Fun to play with, but probably won't make a great pet Smiley

Another possibliity is a clam . I'm sure they could be fun to play with. And if there's no chowder it might as well be dead  Grin.

Grin That was a very funny answer, but also very off the mark.

How can a clam eat with its shell? Remember, the riddle states "Its whole body" is its "mouth".

Another hint:

It can eat with any part of its body

The Sons of Thunder desired it from heaven, but were denied.

(Is that cryptic enough?)

Thanks, I think I got it now. Is it true that one of the ("supporting") characters in the Karl May books was named after it?

Is yes, then Icarus: What's cryptic about it? You might as well have given the answer..  Grin

Well, for starters, I've never heard of Karl May, so I could hardly have been refering to a "supporting character" from his books. My reference was from a different book.

Ahh... If my statement told you the answer, then I am sure you know why I believe few others will understand it, even though it is from a book everyone has heard of. Since very few have ever read it, even of those who speak well of it.

Besides which, my allusion is to an obscure event in it, and another obscure reference. The latter particularly is not likely to be remembered even by those who have read the book.

Does not all this count as cryptic?

Oh yes, I know what you are referring to Icarus; so the answer would be fire
