Took me a sec to get the clue, Speaker. American vs British English and all. You really push the edge of it with your hints.

Dear Dudidu, You were almost there with your first guess. Continue with that line of thought and consider the other clues. Sincerely Speaker PS Hints come in all shapes and sizes.

towr's might be considered a third, but the one I was thinking of is similar to the intended answer. Hint 1: My namesake would know it. Hint 2: My real name, that is.

It towr's answer is OK, then Dudidu's answer way at the top of the thread would be OK too.

Yeah, I recalled that only after I posted, but didn't bother to go back and change it. While not the intended answer, they both can be said to meet the puzzle conditions, with only a little stretching. My 2nd answer is less of a stretch, I think.

I object -- an epistle is a letter; it doesn't contain a letter. But now I finally understand what the intended answer was that you were all hinting at!

how about ::envelope. Envelopes may not allways contain one letter, but perhaps this riddle is about a specific envelope that does contain exactly one letter::

| I disagree. Language is fuzzy that way - a letter has content - i.e. it contains something. But its content is also referred to as being the letter. So an epistle, which is another name for a letter, contains itself. And yes, envelope is the answer hinted at by Speaker.
