"Compound" Words

Today's game involves "imaginary compound words"! I give you a "definition" of the compound word you are trying to find. Both the constituent words AND the so-called compound words are REAL words in the English language; the catch is that the target word is not really a compound word made up in the way I have suggested (and almost certainly differs in meaning from my definition). Here are the puzzles! I have given the answer to #1 as an example. ----------------------------------------------------- 1. (n.) a metropolis of legend ==> sagacity (saga/city) 2. (n.) a country populated only by men 3. (n.) oxidation caused by fog 4. (n.) a girl's band 5. (n.) a homosexual radical 6. (n.) an ingress of fish

You have #3 & #4 correct! Your #2 is wrong (there's no Latin here; as I said, only English words).

5 could be gayal (sort of cattle), but I doubt it. Perhaps ultramodern lifestyle- or you're treading on thin ice with ultramarine? 6 Carpentry Perhaps 2 is Mania... or Romanina.

#6 is correct! As for #2, Mania couldn't work, since while "man" is a word, I don't believe "ia" is. As for #5, gayal covers the "gay" for homosexual, but what would "al" be?

Ha... clever. I would suggest thinking of other synonyms for males though. It's not "man".

| Very close, I'd say. Wouldn't that have to be dame-nation though? Doesn't QUITE work... You're actually on a good path to finding the male one now though with "nation".

"donnation" isn't a word. Remember, "compound" words don't have overlapping letters. And wouldn't machi be the plural of machus? HINT: Think of really, REALLY crappy beers.

That's why they drink really crappy beer. Because all they're doing is crying into it anyway.

That hint made it a little too obvious (and I don't know if anyone knows that brand of beer), but stagnation

Yep. If you don't know of that brand of beer, consider yourself lucky. Well that leaves just one to go! (#5)

Not a bad thought, but remember that spellings do not change in the compound words! It would have to be spelled "Biroot" for that to work. HINT: Your choice of "root" for "radical" is in the wrong field of study in this case. It's not mathematics.

So I'll give another hint. The "field" from which the "radical" synonym draws is chemistry.

| There's a synonym for it in that field? I hope you're not thinking ion , because that most definitely isn't a synonym.

It is "ion". Synonym was a poor word choice. Certainly an ion can be a radical, however. So the original clue is not wrong, my hint was.
