Title: Watch them winding (easy)
Post by aero_guy on Mar 28th, 2003, 8:50pm
Time for round three of the what am I's...

Watch them winding their several ways,
Fords and Packards and Chevrolets,
Plainest, prettiest, best or worst,
Never a one but is my first.

Next is what the potatoes do,
Squashes, beets and tomatoes too.
(Oh, if tomâtoes would only rhyme!
But we can't be satisfied all the time.)

                My Whole
Onions, cabbages, beets and others,
Such are my vegetable brothers.
Olla podrida, soup or stew-
Count on me for a flavor true.

(in the original riddle the first tomatoes had a horiz line over the a, but I can't figure out how to type that)

Hint: how to solve this kind of problem
"first" and "last" refer to syllables, and "whole" refers to the whole final answer.  An example riddle is:

My first is dark;
  My second round:
My whole may mark
  A hate profound.

The answer is blackball.  Black is dark, ball is round, blackball is what you do to exclude someone (like blacklisting them).

A cinch for you maybe, but for some reason I figured out the "hard" puzzle in this trio right off, but this one illuded me, even though I had the first syllable right. For some reason I stuck on the idea of mashing, pulping, or some other operation for syllable two. In retrospect it is easy, but I sure couldn't get it.

Could anyone explain why the second verse should make sense.. As far as I know those veggies don't have any special properties to make the second syllable apply to them more than to any other..

Not that I'm any good at these riddles anyway..

Well you couldn't just write out the names of EVERY vegetable.  Hell it even happens to non-vegetables.  It is literary license.

and that's why my brain doesn't make any association there, and thus it doesn't make any sense to me..
