Title: There is a thing that nothing is...

I searched on this using several variations of parts of the riddle and couldn't find it.  I apologize if it's a repeat:

There is a thing that nothing is,
and yet is has a name.
It's sometimes tall, sometimes short
It joins our talk, joins our sport
And plays at every game.

Except for the third line, [hide]free[/hide] works. But I fail to see any connection between it and "tall" or "short" (besides being in short supply).

Then again, not every game has [hide]freeplay[/hide] either.

Oh well! :-/

(I believe this one is new. At least I don't recognize it.)

My first idea was [hide]break (or pause / gap)[/hide], but I'm not so sure because of the "tall" and the "play at every game".

(I also believe this one is new.)

A question (English): does "that nothing is" similar to "that is nothing"?

If so, then a [hide]shadow[/hide] may match.

Right on, BNC!    :)

Very good. Concerning your question, though - the two phrases "that nothing is" and "that is nothing" do not normally mean the same thing. The first properly means that there is no thing which is this. The second that this is nothing - it has no substance.

Those would be the normal meanings. However poetic license occasionally switches word order around, so "that is nothing" is an accepted alternate meaning for "that nothing is".

For either meaning, one could make a case that [hide]shadow[/hide] fits, and one could also make a case that it doesn't.
