Title: Both at one time, am I one and two
Post by shayes on Sep 3rd, 2005, 10:47am

I received the following and am unable to solve it.  Can anyone help?

Both at one time, am I one and two
Double I render what before was one.
My one with your five gives two work to do,
Against the many found upon man's crown.
I am all mouth, upwards from my waist,
and bite worse toothless than with my teeth.
I have two warring and opposed tastes;
fingers are my eyes, and eyes are at my feet.

I'm going to go with the answer [hide]paper[/hide]. That beats my second choice: [hide]a rock[/hide].

Are you actually suggesting the third possibility, asterex? It seems to work best. In particular, I would say [hide]Barber's shears[/hide].

My explanation:

Both at one time, am I one and two [hide]scissors are a "plural singular" item with two parts[/hide]
Double I render what before was one. [hide]cuts things in two[/hide]
My one with your five gives two work to do, [hide]"your five" are your fingers which combined with one side gives the other side work to do (I'm not entirely happy with this explanation, but it picks up the main idea).[/hide]
Against the many found upon man's crown. [hide]cuts hair[/hide]
I am all mouth, upwards from my waist,  [hide]"waist" is where the scissors are joined, "mouth" is the cutting edges[/hide]
and bite worse toothless than with my teeth. [hide] it cuts without teeth[/hide]
I have two warring and opposed tastes; [hide] refers to the two cutting edges?[/hide]
fingers are my eyes, and eyes are at my feet. [hide]fingers guide the scissors, and its "feet" are the finger holes, which are (like most holes in tools) called "eyes".[/hide]
