Title: six men with no names?
Post by Noke Lieu on Nov 9th, 2008, 7:02pm
This is a bit hashed and rushed,
My head's a bit mashed and crushed.
I'll bet that you'll get it
Yet I still set it.

Six men were singled out, and asked what they did.

"I have the noblest most aristocratic of professions" added the first.

"I hang around musicians"  was beaten out of the second.

"I work with food, but I'm not a chef" said the third, after a serious grilling.

"I wear blue, but I'm not a Smurf. Except I am, but you know what I mean" piped up the fourth.

"I follow up on the fourth's findings" said the fifth, caught out.

"Manual labourer. I've no time for games." said the sixth.

So, what were their names?

One of those jobs is completely correct.
Another is correct, though maybe too specific.

Once you have a few jobs sorted, you'll get their names, I promise.

the first one is just [hide]teacher[/hide]?

Post by Noke Lieu on Nov 10th, 2008, 4:59pm
that is not the job that is too specific.

well if the fourth one is Mario fifth should be Luigi.

DJ instead of Drummer?

just tweaking the riddle... changing "noble" to "aristocratic"...

perhaps I need glasses...

4th and 5th are neither Mario, nor Luigi. Plumber was not the intended answer.

The 4th clue wouldn't work in WA or the NT, but would in NSW and VIC- or the UK, and much of Europe. America...? I suspect that it varies from place to place.

The 5th clue invovles a pesky pun.

... wouldn't work in Weighted Average but not in the New Testament?

What about [hide]policeman[/hide]?

Well in America here we know of the Smurfs cartoon, but I think it's lost in translation if it refers to anything besides the cartoon...

Title: Re: six men with no names?
Post by Noke Lieu on Nov 14th, 2008, 9:11pm
yep, smurfs here are only cartoons too.
However, this fellas name makes him... a Smurf.
And his job has been mentioned (by [hide]Grimbal[/hide]), but not how I'd anticipate.

(oh, does work in WA- could have sworn they didn't wear blue...?)

(edit)
So that means this guy is a policeman... but he "piped".. any word linking pipes and policeman?
(/edit)

Then I'll guess:
[hide]1. High School Teacher
2. Drummer
3. Cook
[/hide]

I think 2 and 3 are correct or nearly so.

2 and 3 are defiantly (and definately) correct.
1- not what I was expecting, and therefore wrong- you'll see why shortly.

Well, in larger police departments there is sometimes a policeman that plays Amazing Graze on bagpipes at the funeral of a fellow policeman killed in the line of duty...  that's all I got at the moment. :)

The Blue man group. Though I'm probably extremely far off with that guess.

Title: Re: six men with no names?

Instead of policeman a [hide]whistle blower[/hide]?

Title: Re: six men with no names?

I dissent from the analogy of piping and whistling...  :D

The connection between a policeman and piping is [hide]copper[/hide]. So if that's the pesky pun, might the fifth clue be [hide]miner[/hide]?

Title: Re: six men with no names?

Ooh, very clever.  Copper it is, I'd say.  Nice!

HA! If only.  ;D

The first is based on a pun as well. In my defence, I didn't come up with it. Mel Brookes did.

For a crossword, I'd have to finish 5 with "we hear" or some such.

[hide]Could the first one be a joker or jester? Aristocrats liked to keep them around, and they also like to talk about aristocrats :) Not sure what to make of the "added the first" bit though, nor have I ever heard of joker or jester being someone's name.

What if the 5th one was Smith?[/hide]

This really isn't going as smoothly as I thought it would. :(

The 6th one was called [hide]Victor[/hide]. You can tell. It's written on his shirt. ???

5. [hide]Dick for Detective?[/hide]

Title: Re: six men with no names?
Post by phlagellum on Nov 19th, 2008, 3:12pm
Nice one, 1337b4k4!  It must be Dick for Detective!

Since the puzzle is:

Quote:
"I follow up on the fourth's findings" said the fifth, caught out.

That could only mean that the "pesky pun" is "caught with your Dick out"!  ;D

:'(

Ho hum.

More clues all round... (their jobs)

1... what a mathematical entomologist would do as a small career change.

2... got.
3... got.
4... got.

5... Often seen in cafes but doesn't make the coffee.
(it turns out, depending on how technically you take it (and which country you're in) it may be better to have had him say "I debate the fourth's findings")

6... Just gave you a clue... more? okay, he's not called Yvan.

Victor is a [hide]Navvy[/hide]

That should be enough to let it all fall into place.

there were 6 men singled out..

the 6th is called [hide]Victor[/hide] and he is a [hide]navvy[/hide]

Title: Re: six men with no names?

Well it can't be coincidence then that each job has a double letter.  That must determine the first letter of the name.  But how to get the whole name.... hmm...

I still don't get the "it's written on his shirt" clue.  I mean, besides the fact that some laborers have their name patches sewn on their shirts...

Incidentally, I had to look up the word "navvy", having never heard it before. :)

Title: Re: six men with no names?
Post by 1337b4k4 on Nov 21st, 2008, 3:31pm
I dont know if the whole name is what we're looking for.
[hide]
The first one might be queen, and the fifth job attorney if the double letter thing makes sense.

Given the other hints, we may have guesses into the names. For example, 4 might be "Papa" from the smurfs (I don't know other smurfs besides papa, maybe they have a policeman smurf?*

The name for 1 may be Elizabeth because that is an E-name often associated with queens, but it has nothing to do with "adding" so i'd doubt it.

So far:
1. E__ the *Queen?*      Bad Guesses: Elizabeth?,
2. M__ the Dummer         Bad Guesses: Melee?
3. O__ the Cook              Bad Guesses: Oven?
4. *Papa?* the Copper
5. T___ the *Attorney?* Bad Guesses: Trap? Trick?
6. Victor the Navvy
[/hide]

Yes to [hide] Papa[/hide] the smurf/copper.

The clue about the shirt.. that was just an excuse to give you guys a hand.

aw... I don't want to have to spell it out for you...

Title: Re: six men with no names?
Post by Noke Lieu on Nov 30th, 2008, 6:11pm
okay, 3 strikes and I'm out. :-[

1--- Charlie (accountant- it has "count" in the title)
2--- Mike
3--- Oscar
4--- Papa
5--- Romeo (barrister, not barista)
6--- Victor

Hence, 6 were chosen (from 26).

sorry to one and all. Didn't think it was a "Can you guess what I'm thinking?"
I  thought the structure was there, thought I'd laid down enough clues.
Am I wrong?

If I had picked up on the phonetic alphabet (which I should have considering my name) this would have been solvable, I think.

Title: Re: six men with no names?
Post by phlagellum on Dec 1st, 2008, 9:40am
OK Noke, the answers still didn't exactly tell me how one could know their actual names.

As I said before, I got the fact that the double letter in the profession defined the first letter of the name.

But how can you know a name from only the first letter?

I mean, sure, I know people use names when telling letters over the phone, as with Whiskey Tango Foxtrot's name, but are you saying these name-letter associations are actually standardized somewhere, e.g. in the military?  I'm not implying that there isn't a standard; I'm merely professing my ignorance of it given that it does exist.

I had always assumed people just used the first word that came to mind...  e.g., WTF could be Wilbur Trout Fargo just as easily as Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

There is a standard phonetic alphabet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_phonetic_alphabet
It seems Noke Lieu picked those that are or can be used as a first name.
