Title: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 17th, 2008, 11:54am Today's game involves "imaginary compound words"! I give you a "definition" of the compound word you are trying to find. Both the constituent words AND the so-called compound words are REAL words in the English language; the catch is that the target word is not really a compound word made up in the way I have suggested (and almost certainly differs in meaning from my definition). Here are the puzzles! I have given the answer to #1 as an example. ----------------------------------------------------- 1. (n.) a metropolis of legend ==> sagacity (saga/city) 2. (n.) a country populated only by men 3. (n.) oxidation caused by fog 4. (n.) a girl's band 5. (n.) a homosexual radical 6. (n.) an ingress of fish |

Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by Noke Lieu on Nov 17th, 2008, 2:01pm 2... virile (vir (Latin for man) Isle) ? 3... [hide]mist/rust[/hide] 4... herring (that's abit lewis carrol for me though) Interesting distraction... hope I can get on with my work though! |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 17th, 2008, 3:39pm You have #3 & #4 correct! 8) Your #2 is wrong (there's no Latin here; as I said, only English words). |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by Noke Lieu on Nov 17th, 2008, 8:55pm 5 could be gayal (sort of cattle), but I doubt it. Perhaps ultramodern lifestyle- or you're treading on thin ice with ultramarine? 6 [hide] Carpentry[/hide] Perhaps 2 is Mania... or Romanina. :P |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 18th, 2008, 8:34am #6 is correct! As for #2, Mania couldn't work, since while "man" is a word, I don't believe "ia" is. :) As for #5, gayal covers the "gay" for homosexual, but what would "al" be? |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by Noke Lieu on Nov 18th, 2008, 3:51pm managerial... so close to man-algeria... |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 19th, 2008, 8:33am Ha... clever. I would suggest thinking of other synonyms for males though. It's not "man". |

Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by Grimbal on Nov 19th, 2008, 2:04pm [hide]he-malaya[/hide]? [hide]male turkey?[/hide]? [hide]father-land[/hide]? |

Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by tohuvabohu on Nov 19th, 2008, 2:08pm I'm wondering if this male country is anywhere close to the female country, dam-nation. |

Very close, I'd say. Wouldn't that have to be dame-nation though? Doesn't QUITE work... :) You're actually on a good path to finding the male one now though with "nation". |

Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 19th, 2008, 2:41pm Summary so far: 1. (n.) a metropolis of legend ==> sagacity 2. (n.) a country populated only by men ==> ???-[hide]nation[/hide] 3. (n.) oxidation caused by fog ==> [hide]mistrust[/hide] 4. (n.) a girl's band ==> [hide]herring[/hide] 5. Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by Grimbal on Nov 19th, 2008, 2:54pm machi/nation? (machi would be the plural of macho...) a man nation? don/nation? |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 19th, 2008, 3:14pm "donnation" isn't a word. Remember, "compound" words don't have overlapping letters. And wouldn't machi be the plural of machus? :P HINT: Think of really, REALLY crappy beers. |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by tohuvabohu on Nov 20th, 2008, 7:56am a country where women aren't invited? What kind of a party would that be? |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 20th, 2008, 8:33am That's why they drink really crappy beer. Because all they're doing is crying into it anyway. |

Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by 1337b4k4 on Nov 21st, 2008, 3:12pm That hint made it a little too obvious (and I don't know if anyone knows that brand of beer), but [hide]stagnation[/hide] |

Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 24th, 2008, 8:00am Yep. If you don't know of that brand of beer, consider yourself lucky. Well that leaves just one to go! (#5) |

Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on Nov 24th, 2008, 2:04pm 5. [hide]Beirut? (Bi and Root)[/hide] |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 24th, 2008, 2:07pm Not a bad thought, but remember that spellings do not change in the compound words! It would have to be spelled "Biroot" for that to work. HINT: [hide]Your choice of "root" for "radical" is in the wrong field of study in this case. It's not mathematics.[/hide] |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by iono on Nov 24th, 2008, 5:37pm Its weird how you said "today's" game. Its been going on for a while now. |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 25th, 2008, 8:20am It has? How do you mean? Because it wasn't wierd when I said it, but hey... not my fault I stumped people. :) |
Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 25th, 2008, 8:29am So I'll give another hint. The "field" from which the "radical" synonym draws is [hide]chemistry[/hide]. |

Title: Re: "Compound" Words Post by phlagellum on Nov 25th, 2008, 9:41am It is "ion". Synonym was a poor word choice. Certainly an ion can be a radical, however. So the original clue is not wrong, my hint was. |
