If you interpret this riddle strictly literally, there are many things it could be. Anything that wasn't a person could have changed him.

I think perhaps the intended answer is [hide]better left for a certain poster (whose name starts with N) to solve.[/hide]

Yes. It could be any number of things. But which one ought to change one 'for sure' as in being unavoidable? Or mayhap I already answered me own question? Whoopsie-daisy . . .
