hello! i'm william wu, an electrical engineering graduate student at stanford university. my interests lean toward the theoretical side, in communications fields such as statistical signal processing, coding theory and information theory. incidentally, if you're wondering why this site is on a berkeley server, my undergraduate studies were done at berkeley, in EECS. i've been too lazy to move everything.

most of this site is devoted to some of my interests, particularly riddles and mathematical puzzles. this topic consumes most of the visitor bandwidth, and almost all of the sprawling sea of educational forum content. there's also some stuff on psychology, fractals, and other neat things. if you're into math and/or puzzles, i think you'll enjoy the forum, and i invite you to join. it's an archive of discussions for thousands of puzzles at all levels of difficulty. new problems arise almost every hour, and we have members spanning all ages, countries, and professions. having the chance to build such a community is one of the nicest things I've ever taken part of.

well, that's all for now. admittedly this site isn't very personal. in short, i used to be some so-called genius dubbed "The Wu" when i attended ghetto schools back in the day, but now i'm just "a" Wu, with greatly attenuated magnetic properties. yet, a small voice inside me still hopes that i can do something stellar with my life.

  1. I sent you an e-mail, but I got an error message saying your e-mail address doesn't exist.
    • You have to remove the "NO_SPAM_" prefix that I appended to all e-mail links on this site, to deter spam robots. If you were too dense to figure this out, I probably don't want to correspond with you anyways :)

  2. I have the provably optimal solution to the 100 prisoners problem ...
    • [ sigh ] ... no you don't ... first make sure you can beat an average runtime of 27 years.

  3. Are you some kind of Wu-Tang Clan freak?
    • No; actually, I don't like most of their music. This is kind of an inside joke.

  4. How much does CD X cost?
    • Sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about. ^_^

  5. What do you use to make this site?
    • All code is hard coded with basic text editors (vi, emacs, notepad). I used Photoshop 6.0 to build some of the images, in conjunction with Eye Candy 4000 plug-ins. Most video game screenshots are taken by myself via emulators: primarily NeoRAGEx, ZSNES, MAME32, ePSXe, Final Burn Alpha, and Genecyst. Chinese character GIFs are made by taking screenshots of True-Type Font characters I conjure in NJStar WP via pinyin input. This whole site is actually executed somewhat amateurishly, although it ends up looking nice to most people. I won't elaborate on these amateurish innards.

  6. Where is this slashdot article about your riddles site?
    • My tiny claim to fame: http://slashdot.org/articles/02/07/23/1148247.shtml?tid=133. The site has also been mentioned in a best-selling job-interview puzzle book, MENSA newsletter, math journal publication, and various other places. It was also used as a regular instructional tool for an ESL course! OK I'm done.

  7. Are these questions really frequently asked?
    • Nah ... at least, not anymore. I just talked about the slashdot article to show off.
