- Cygwin: unix shell and tools for windows (including perl, awk, etc.)
- MikTeX: TeX implementation
- Scientific Word: to compile Scientific Word files download the free trial version and install only the TeX packages (never expires) (install MikTeX first.)
- NT Emacs
- cygwin-mount.el: makes NT Emacs recognize cygwin paths
- matlab.el: Matlab-mode for emacs
- AUCTeX: a better LaTeX-mode for emacs
- CS-RCS: basic revision control for MS Word, Excel, and text files, with Windows explorer integration
