Bio

Andrés Gómez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Gómez holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California Berkeley. He holds a B.S in Mathematics and a B.S. in Computer Science from the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia).

Research interests

Dr. Gómez is interested in the broadly defined field of decision-making under uncertainty, which contains problems that arise in areas as diverse as finance, machine learning, routing, manufacturing, revenue management and healthcare. These problems can often be cast as optimization problems with integer variables (to model logical choices) and nonlinear terms (to model the uncertainty or risk). Such problems are non-convex and often hard to solve. By studying their structure and identifying strong convex relaxations or approximations, Dr. Gómez devises efficient algorithmic approaches to tackle the problems.

In particular, his research focuses on

  • Discrete optimization (combinatorial, mixed-integer)
  • Nonlinear optimization (submodular, quadratic, second-order conic)
  • Robust optimization.
