UC Berkeley to put out Nap Pods on campus for students to sleep in as an alternative to sleeping during lectures in Wheeler

On Wednesday, UC Berkeley unveiled its new REST zones on campus. REST zones (or Really Expensive Sleep Tombs) are designated locations on campus and the Tang Center for which students can take naps. Each zone features pods specially designed by coffee maker Keurig to enclose students and provide them a comfortable and safe space to take a nap. The fact that theses nap pods resemble the biological structure of sperm is purely coincidental. At a press conference on memorial glade, UC Berkeley defended its decision to spend $92,000 on the creation of 40 nap pods, while in the background students were quietly napping in the afternoon sun.

Because of UC Berkeley’s commitment to its student’s mental health, spokesman Gabriel S. Despierto said “We want you to feel like a million bucks when you wake up, or at the very least $2,300. Because that’s how much it cost us to build each pod”. When asked about the fact that the campus had only built 40 pods to accommodate 37,000 students, Mr. Despierto cited the fact since it was midterm season and Berkeley students weren’t getting much sleep anyway, he didn’t expect demand for the pods to be that high. In order to facilitate the student experience of using the pods, Mr. Despierto announced that they would be piping in audio from Chem 1A lectures in order to induce sleep more quickly.

Due to potential concern of sleeping in places where other people have drooled, UC Berkeley decided to go with pods by coffee maker Keurig which has specialized in creating environmentally friendly one time use coffee pods. Currently 3 nap pods have already been thrown away, though they have been replaced by the comparatively archaic 21st century napping technology in the form of couches.

Because UC Berkeley currently has an excess of money, and is not at all in a $150 million dollar deficit, Mr. Despierto said that the university was considering adding more nap pods to campus, but that they would have to sleep on it first.
