PROJECT AREA: LEED

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized certification system that measures how well a building or community performs across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. There are different project certification categories such as New Construction and Commercial Interiors and 4 levels of certification: Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum (highest level).

Currently, with the assistance of PP-CS, several new constructions and existing buildings are pursuing LEED certification in University of California, Berkeley. At the same time, PP-CS is working to certify the whole UC Berkeley campus for LEED Volume certification. In the past PP-CS collaborated with UCOP to host a day-long Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Existing Building, Operations and Maintenance (LEED EBOM) workshop open to the entire campus community.

University Hall (built in 1959) is home to the School of Public Health, EH&S (Environmental Health and Safety), University Visitor’s Center, the Budget Office, and Cashier’s Department. In 2008, EH&S formed a sustainability committee with the School of Public Health to certify University Hall under LEED:EBOM. The building inhabitants have formed a ‘LEED Certification Project Team’ whose purpose will be to keep all departments in the building informed about the LEED process. Some of the projects that will implemented to achieve certification include:

The LEED EB:OM team is planning to finish the certification Spring 2012, and hopefully UC Berkeley will have its first LEED EB:OM Certified building soon!
