I think the main problem with the MAI as described is that it involves a complex and multilateral treaty that creates a governing organization above and beyond the United States. This is the kind of "entangling" alliance that Thomas Jefferson opposed. It puts us in the ackward position of trying to enforce changes in other country's policies. What are we going to do if other countries don't allow themselves to be sued for discrimination? Embargo them? Invade them? I certainly wouldn't want to see trade sanctions imposed as a penalty for disobeying this treaty. In my opinion, that would do more harm than good, not just to foreigners, but to people here in the United States. The best way for us to go on this kind of issue is to just unilaterally declare free trade.
