Workout and Buffet

This morning I went to John Wooden Center to do some workout, as usual, when I saw this girl doing hip abduction with 205 pounds. I didn’t have my glasses on, so I couldn’t see the girl clearly, but I could still tell that she is thin. Perhaps she is a dancer or something, because I use that machine with 160 pounds. It’s true that we did different types of workout. I do mine with larger number of reps and a larger, longer motion, which would require more muscle endurance; she did hers with less number of reps, but it was still pretty impressive.

In the afternoon, when I went to do laundry, I stopped by India’s Oven, which is right next to the laundry, for the first time. The last two times I went, I couldn’t get in. The first time was because when I discovered it, I had already finished my laundry. The second time was because I didn’t realize that they didn’t open on Sundays. So this time, I finally was able to try their food. Their food is actually pretty good. The selection was not that good, but for the price of $8, you couldn’t ask for more. They served Naan, and a drink (although I got water like usual). I don’t know any names of Indian dishes, except for Tandoori Chicken, so I won’t say what is there, but all the foods were pretty good. I especially liked the potato cakes. I definitely ate too much, though. I had 4 full plates of food. There was a group of 3 people next to me, and I think I ate as much as they did. I was so full that my stomach hurt for the entire rest of the day.

Pacific Surfliner

I rode the pacific surfliner down to LA from SB today. I took the earliest one today, which means I got to arrive at LA at around 9am. Today, I got a seat on oceanside and actually caught some view while working on my code.

The Green Hornet

Ellen and I went to watch The Green Hornet today. We were both upset at the fact that this film is only showing in 3D, because we had a hunch that the 3D, in this case, is just a money-making scheme. It turns out we were right, but more on that later. Since I had my glasses on that day, it was somewhat difficult to fit the 3D glasses on my head, but I got it on, anyways. These glasses were different from the ones that I was used to in AMC and Century Theatres. They were heavier. So between my own glasses and the 3D glasses, they made my ears hurt a little from the extra weight.

The movie was pretty action-packed, and Jay Chou spoke more lines than I thought he would. Since he didn’t speak English, I thought they might keep his lines to a minimum. Jay Chou played Kato, and in the movie, everything he designed was written in Chinese (including the super-awesome coffee-maker and the Black Beauty). It led to some funny situations when Britt Reid couldn’t figure out which switches to flip in the Black Beauty. Cameron Diaz was her usual self as Lenore, as well as Seth Rogan, who played Britt, a.k.a., The Green Hornet. I guess there couldn’t be too much chemistry between Jay Chou and Seth Rogan because Jay Chou didn’t speak English fluently, so basically Seth Rogan had to carry a large portion of the movie, and it just gets tiring eventually, especially since he co-wrote the screenplay. I think Kevin Smith should have wrote the screenplay instead of declining it. It was just too much Seth Rogan.

The movie employed a pretty stylish technique for the movie, showing the bad guys in different colors and stretching the reality around the people as they fought. Although I thought that was a little too much, it kind of worked for this movie since it was based on a comic. An effect that didn’t work was the 3D effect. It was so underutilized for this movie that it basically amounted to a ripoff. In fact, the most memorable scene with 3D effects was the credits, where it was folded in the middle like a pamphlet. That was hardly worth the 3D price. I also thought the ending was a bit lacking. The ending was that Britt didn’t get the DA’s confessions of his crimes. I get that Seth Rogan is trying to show that Britt is such a screw-up that he couldn’t even get the recording into the sushi usb flash drive correctly, but that just seemed like an extra joke that didn’t need to be there. I mean, in the end, they had to honor the DA’s death, since the truth couldn’t get out. Overall, this movie is worth a watch, but most likely a rental, since the 3D glasses are just a gimmick.

Coast Starlight

I took the Coast Starlight train 11 to go from Oakland to Santa Barbara on January 16th. I got this ticket for $75. I later realized that because it was Sunday and on MLK weekend, it was more expensive, since the cheapest ticket for this route was $37. I had to wake up early because I had to catch the earliest ccc bus line 6 to go to Orinda BART at 9:30am. Any later than that, I would have missed the train. I stayed up pretty late and pretty much slept only 3 hours because I was watching Kim Possible in Spanish. I also went to buy some toothpaste for Mom and Dad since I was going to take the only tube down South.

The walk from Lake Merritt BART to Amtrak Oakland Jack London was longer than I thought it would be. When I checked it later on Google Map, I realized it was a 0.6 miles walk, which is not so bad, but longer than I expected. I was carrying a bunch of apples that day. When I got to Amtrak, the train was already there. It’s a good thing that the Quik-Trak machines worked pretty well since no attendants were there. I just had to scan the bar-code in and I got my ticket in seconds. I guess Amtrak is suffering from budget cuts, too. I would realize later on this trip that the Amtrak schedule for Coast Starlight is designed with delays built-in, which is why it usually arrives early into a station and has to wait around for awhile before departing. It obviously can’t depart too early, since people rely on the schedule for getting to the station on-time.

The double-decker Superliner

The train was pretty comfortable. The seats were slightly different than the Pacific Surfliner, but not too different. My car was the one with an Arcade Car on the bottom. They had Raiden Fighters 2 (yay!), Metal Slug 4 (bleh), some cabinet with many boring puzzle games, and Cruisin’ USA (more bleh). Usually, I would be excited about Metal Slug, but Metal Slug 4 was the worst one in the series. The only one that was worse was Metal Slug 1, and that’s only because it’s the first one, so they couldn’t put enough content into it. I blame the Korean developers for Metal Slug 4 for that. Anyways, I played some Raiden Fighters 2, since when I got on, the Metal Slug cabinet’s CRT screen was broken. When I went down later, the Metal Slug screen came on, and I “tried” to play it. “Try” is the keyword here, because initially, I stuck in a quarter to see if it would work. It didn’t. So I went and got some tokens from the machine, since I knew tokens worked for Raiden Fighters 2. They didn’t work, either! I was disappointed and angry, but I figured it was God’s way of telling me I should do work. I spent most of my time on the train doing work, as a matter of fact, and taking short naps in between.

This picture fails to capture how large the train is, but double-deckers are huge!

From 20110116-coast-starlight

Initially, I was seated next to a group of people who seemed to have come from Oregon, and were going to Disneyland. There were kids in this group and they were annoying, but that’s what I signed up for when I decided to take the train. The conductor announced the vistas as we passed by. I didn’t sit on oceanside, so I couldn’t see much, and when I did get a chance to switch to that side, it was too dark to see anything. That’s really too bad, since I haven’t seen the scenery from San Jose to Santa Barbara on a train before.

There were people talking on the train about football. Even the conductor was announcing scores, since it was Sunday. The Jets beat Patriots that day, which was good because the Patriots lost. At the same time, I don’t like the Jets, either.

When I got to Santa Barbara, it was 8:50pm, which is about half an hour late. I was going to buy something to eat on the train, since I only brought 6 slices of bread with me. So between that and breakfast, I didn’t eat enough. The food on the train was pretty expensive, though. It was $1.75 for a bag of chips. I decided not to buy food on the train. Instead, Ellen and I went to Chipotle to get something to eat when I arrived. I forgot how good Chipotle was. Ellen got some Yogurt from Pinkberry’s, which had a really strong yogurt smell in the store for some reason.

Haircut and Key

I went to Cuts Unlimited Lafayette today to get my haircut today. It’s just a short trim today. I had to get rid of my sideburns and make my hair shorter. The lady who cut my hair was nice, I didn’t get her name, though. We talked about how nice my glasses are and how it would be expensive to get them in the US.

Then I went to ACE Hardware to get a new key made from the old one. I figured I could use a key. It was made in Taiwan.

Run and Library

I ran in the morning, since I couldn’t sleep. I woke up at 8am for some reason. Maybe it’s all that sickness sleeping catching up on me. It was a good run, and I also tried to do some pull-ups on the playground bars, but it was hard since they were all wet from the morning dew. I also didn’t have enough grip in my hands to do too many. I think that may be more of a problem than my muscles, so I guess I have to work on my grip strength, too.

I also went to the library. The guy at the library offered his seat, since he had the seat with the low table and the outlet that comes out from the ground. This way, when I connect my computer to the floor, no one would trip over the wires. I managed to get some programming done at the library, but no so much, since I arrived late afternoon. I figured I would make up for it later.

Driving Back to Moraga

Mom and I drove back to Moraga today. We stopped by Honeymoon Cafe, since it was rated pretty well on Yelp. Mom ordered some Green Eggs and Ham Pita with coffee, while I had a Pastrami & Eggs with hot chocolate milk. The milk came in an extra large cup, and the coffee was self-served, with lots of large cups to choose from.

Lots of coffee cups

Both of our dishes came with a small citrus (don’t know the name), a cut banana, and a slice of pear. I thought Mom’s meal was better, though. Mine was basically pastrami with potatoes and possibly yam, with an egg on the top. It tasted good, but had I known that there was going to be something sweet in mine, I would have ordered something else.

The cup was bigger in real life than in this photo

We stopped by Trader Joe’s to pick up some food, and waited for the cable guy to arrive. He arrived a little after our scheduled time of 2pm. It was raining outside, but he had plastic food guards to prevent him from messing up our carpet, which was very useful. It turns out he had to replace the old connectors in our cable box with some new connectors, and that took awhile, so Mom started to take the old hinges out of the garage door. There were some problems in setting up the cable modem, because some lady on the other end of our technician’s phone doesn’t know what she’s talking about. The technician told her that I bought the modem brand new on Amazon, and she replied by saying that she didn’t know what Amazon was. How could you possibly get a job in technical support and not know about Amazon?! But in the end, the technician set up the entire thing, including the wireless router, and we went out to buy some screws for the garage door.

Since Ellen already ordered the #3 hinges, we only had to get some screws. The nice lady at OSH helped us with picking out grade 8 yellow-zinc-coated hex screws in 1/4″-20″ x 1/2″. We also got some screws in 3/4″ length since Mom decided that longer screws might be better. After we fixed the garage door, we tested it out and it seemed to work fine. There were some holes that the garage-door installer didn’t use, though, so it turns out our garage-door installer did a shoddy job.

Then at night I took Mom to the BART station. I promised I would work on my project, but I might have to go to the library or LA to do that.

Finished Blog Queue

For a long time, I created a very long queue in my blog. In fact, I think I had about eighteen or more drafts when I started to finish them. From today on, I hope I don’t fall behind on my blog again.
