Palomino and Up 2009

Up 2009

Went to watch this film on the Tuesday after my finals are over. I guess that’s the good thing about finishing all my finals early. Still, even if I had my finals after Monday, as long as it’s not on Wednesday, I think I would have went to watch it.

Before we went to watch the movie, we made a stop at Palomino in Westwood. There was a large crowd, as usual, since it was happy hour. When I went in with Cesar, we spotted two of his friends sitting at the bar already. We lucked out a bit, though, as I saw a table at the corner where people just left, and I quickly took it. In Palomino, there’s no seating arrangement, so we were lucky to get some seats. However, these seats, since it was at the corner, did not provide that much space. Palomino tables were made for 3 people, I think. And this lady next to us was being a bitch and being fat about not wanting to move. She was like, “Oh, so ‘I’ don’t need to watch the Laker-Magic game, but ‘you’ can watch the game.” And we were like, well, we’re not really that interested in watching the game. In really, she wasn’t really watching the game anyways, just trying to be a pain-in-the-ass to us. (Well, I guess we were trying to fit too many people in that tiny table). Yeah, in the end we really had 5 people at one table when we were eating. More people showed up later, but they weren’t joining us to eat.

After the meal, we went to watch the movie at Landmark Regent. The theater was not bad, but the seats were terrible. I spent half of the movie trying to seat myself comfortably. I really liked the short. It gives you hope that there’s good in this world, afterall. Plus, it was pretty funny. The movie was great, as well. Coming in, I thought the running time (96 minutes) was a bit short, but the movie didn’t seem short, at all. It was just right. There was a 3-D version at some theaters, but my sister said it wasn’t worth it, anyways, since Pixar did not intend for this to be a 3-D film. I think 3-D is not that big of a deal anyways. Except for movies like the upcoming The Final Destination (why didn’t they just name it Final Destination 4?), it’s only there to attract kids.

What was I talking about? Oh, right, Up. Yeah, this entire movie was just really well done. I really liked the dog, Dug, and the bird, Kevin. They were hilarious. The movie really makes you want to take an adventure in your life. Now I really want to go to South America, in a house! Haha, speaking of the house, I read that each of the balloons on the house were independently rendered. Since an artist obviously can’t go in and render all those balloons, Pixar used a physics system to render them. Basically, you give parameters for the balloons and other objects and just hit render. If the results are not good, you tweak something and run it again. Anyways, it looked good on the screen.

All in all, a great night relaxing after my finals.
