Her motivation and drive comes from her ability to pilot an Evangelion. She's outgoing, supremely confident, and remarkably aggressive- the qualities that define her self-appointed role as the EVA pilots' leader.
Asuka gets along surprisingly well with her fellow pilots. She sees Rei as a rival and Shinji as a doormat. This works out beautifully since Rei doesn't care and Shinji, being the housebroken guy he is, lets Asuka walk over him 99.999% of the time.
Her relationship with Misato is pretty amusing. Both live under the same roof, and both compete for Asuka's mentor, Kaji Ryouji. Although Misato wins because she's older (and also, legal), Asuka's teenage crush on her mentor blinds her to this in the lopsided tug-of-war.
All in all, she's an dynamic character and always fun to watch.
