Misato provides Shinji with a home and company. In return, he does all the housework (cooking, cleaning, taking out the trash, preparing the bathwater, etc). Even though she essentially housebreaks Shinji, she eventually becomes close Shinji and looks out for his well-being much like an older sister would. And as Gendo and Shinji's father-son relationship deteriorates, Misato and Shinji take on the role of surrogate family members for each other.
Asuka also lives with the them, but she usually plays the role of the disgruntled houseguest. =)
Misato excels in her ability to manage NERV operations, although she can't handle her personal life with the same finesse. Her only company at home was Pen-Pen before Shinji's arrival. Like Shinji, she was also very much alone in the world. And like many of the characters in Evangelion, her past is laced with tragedy and rife with the dysfunctions springing forth from them. As a result, her attraction to Kaji is very unorthodox. (You need to see it to believe it...eech)
One other note of interest: Misato likes to drink beer. Lots of beer. Lots and lots of beer!
