Scoring the Five-Facet Mindfulness Scale

As its name implies, the FFMS measures five different aspects of mindfulness.  In order to determine your score, calculate the following subtotals:

Facet

Sum of Item #s (In Parentheses)

Nonreactivity to Inner Experience

= (4 + 9 + 19 + 21 + 24 + 29 + 33)

Observing / Noticing / Attending to Sensations / Perceptions / Thoughts / Feelings

= (1 + 6 + 11 + 15 + 20 + 26 + 31 + 36)

Acting with Awareness / Automatic Pilot/Concentration / Nondistraction*

= 48.0 - (5 + 8 + 13 + 18 + 23 + 28 + 34 + 38)

Describing / Labeling with Words*

= 18.0 + (2 + 7 + 27 + 32 + 37) - (12 + 16 + 22)

Nonjudging of Experience*

= 48.0 - (3 + 10 + 14 + 17 + 25 + 30 + 35 + 39)

Note: Some items of these scales (in italics) are reverse-scored, such that a score of 5 indicates less mindfulness.  This key takes account of the reverse-scored items.

No population norms are available for the scale, but a study by Baer et al. (2008) compared the facet scores for a large group of regular meditators, compared with nonmeditating college students at a large state university.
