What we now know today as Kapwa actually began in 1994 as a a Bible study of 5 to 6 students led by Jess Delegencia, Jeannie Celestial, and Ella de Castro. In 1996, the Pilipino-American Bible Study (PABS) was formed as an outreach ministry of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) to the Pilipino community. As membership grew from a 1996 outreach summer Bible study, "Salt and Light Summer," the group was renamed Kapwa, Tagalog for "shared identity." Whereas PABS may have appeared exclusive because of the 'Pilipino-American' distinction, the term kapwa, whose connotations include fraternity, friendship, and family, is an invitation to the entire community to gather together in unity and fellowship.
