During the semester we will review the roots of the current practice of Chinese medicine. We will also look at exciting current research, growing acceptance and integration by allopathic medicine, and challenges in acceptance and experimentation by western scientific methods. We will try to answer two important questions: 1) Why did Chinese and Western medicine take different paths, especially with regard to anatomy and surgery, and later came together in such areas as acupuncture? 2) How did the current misconceptions and apparent contradicitons with western medicine arise, and can they be explained? Some instruction in skills and techniques will be provided to illustrate historical and current practices. These will be selected from, among others, reading Qi pulses, preparing simple culinary and herbal remedies, acupressure, Tui Na massage, and Qi Gong.
