One Health Student Initiative Relaunch!

The One Health Student Initiative at UC Berkeley was founded in 2016 by undergraduate students and was an active student organization that brought together members of the UC Berkeley community with interests in the environment, human health, and animal health.

We at the One Health Student Initiative are excited to relaunch this student collaborative with new leadership. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of having conversations about the One Health model to better understand the intersections of human health, animal health, and the health of the environment. We invite all members of the UC Berkeley community to join us in our relaunch of the collaborative by filling out our interest form and leadership form. We hope to create an interdisciplinary space in which students can learn from professionals in One Health fields while creating community with one another. Join us to become a part of this growing organization and become involved in student life on campus!

Thank you for coming!!

Hello everyone!

Thank you for joining us this year for our first annual One Health / Planetary Health Research Symposium! Here’s a break down of our speakers as well as some pictures from the event.

Alone we can make a great difference, but together we can change the world

One Health / Planetary Health Symposium!

Come one come all! Bring your friends to the annual One Health Planetary Health Symposium where attendees will have the opportunity to engage with a climate change panel, see grad/undergrad student work, eat free food, and find a community that cares about helping the health of Earth!

We have the honor of sharing Woutrina Smith, the co-director of the Center of Expertise for Planetary Health, who will be providing us with insights into the field, her career, and directions with climate change problems. On the panel we will also be having Dr. Federico Castillo, who focuses on ecology in climate change research under the Planetary Health model, Dr. Steve Lindow, who studies microbial communities and plant pathology,  and Tomas Leon, a graduate student studying the architectural design and maintenance of water-borne infectious diseases.

Did we mention free food and admission?

Hope to see you there! 🙂

First Meeting!

Hello everyone!

This week we’re having our first meeting on February 7th, 8-9pm in Dwinelle 255. In the first half of the meeting, we’ll be welcoming Dr. Sophia Papageorgiou, a veterinarian by training and an esteemed member of the One Health Initiative at UC Davis to talk about the journey she’s been on in the field.

Here is a brief bio about her:

Sophia Papageogiou, DVM, MPVM, PhD has been involved with One Health and Planetary Health through the UC Global Health Institute. She has a passion for animals that has driven her through UC Davis’s veterinary and PD program, where studied wildlife and conservational medicine. Professionally, Dr. Papageorgiou hopes to implement the One Health model to promote the health of animals, humans, and the ecosystems in which they reside. Additionally, she aspires to train students in epidemiology, ecosystem health, and the newly defined global and One Health sciences that link these disciplines.

The second half of our meeting will focus on starting the working groups (1) Team building for the One Health competition team and (2) the Symposium Planning Committee.
