Mark Speaks
The November issue of Mojo lists Touch Me I'm Sick as one of the 50 Greatest U.S. Punk Tracks. Here's what Mark says in the magazine: (Thanks to Pete Maranzano and Tim Hall)

The riff is Steve's, inspired by a local garagey band called The Nights And Days. They had a similar rhythmic thing with chords. To me, it just sounded like the fast part of I'm Sick of You by The Stooges, which is also Happenings Ten Years Time Ago by The Yardbirds. You might as well steal from the best. The frequent use of 'c'mon' and 'yeah' was in homage to The Saints.

It was one of the first songs we wrote. Our goal was to put out a single, we didn't really think beyond that. We'd been recording our practices on a boombox. Bruce at Sub Pop said, 'Go into the studio and record it properly and then I'll tell you what I think.' Jack Endino captured it really, really well on 8-track. It was very lucky and very easy for us, at the beginning.

For a while, in the early 90's, we reacted against it: 'We've got other stuff! We've got Good stuff! We don't have to play this every time.' But we know a large percentage of people want to hear it so we might as well play it for them. And it's a fun song to play, so there's no point over-thinking it. We still fuck it up. But you know what's funny? You can hear on the single, after the first verse, when the chorus happens the first time, somebody starts up the chorus a second time, and then quickly jumps back. It's the same mistake that we make today captured on the single! And we were aware of it at the time-'Ah, whatever'.

It is what it is. It's about gnarly guitar sounds, fast drumming and gnarly vocals. I think i said 'gnarly' twice in that sentence. As the skaters would say, it's totally sick...
