More Mark on The Sonics

Mark, doing more press for The Sonics than any Mudhoney show, has a quote in today's Seattle Post-Intelligencer:
"There were a ton of older Northwest bands at the show [The Experience Music Project opening in June, 2000]," Arm said. "They asked the Sonics to play, but they couldn't do it for whatever reason. Scott McCaughey (of the Young Fresh Fellows) caught wind of it and asked me if I would take part in paying tribute to the Sonics, and I said, 'By all means.' So we cobbled together a group of Sonics fans, which was pretty easy to do.

Unlike other musicians from the Northwest, Arm didn't grow up listening to the Sonics. In fact, it wasn't until 1980 that he heard them, after reading a review by a British writer of the reissued 1965 album, "Here Are the Sonics."

"I went to Portland and found a copy at Park Avenue Records," he said. "And it destroyed me. I was really, heavily getting into punk rock at the time, and it was this super-direct, super-raw sound. It was everything that I wanted at the time. And it still is to this day."

and today's Tacoma News Tribune:

"I bought the Etiquette reissue of Here Are the Sonics and was just, like, pinned against the wall," Arm said, laughing. "The whole (expletive) band was amazing: The pounding, ferocious drums; the raw guitar and, of course, topping it off was Jerry's voice, which when I started singing was one of the things I was aiming for."

Thursday, October 30
Mark on The Sonics

Mark, in tomorrow's Seattle Times:
They're kinda like punk rock like 15 years before punk rock happened. Hearing the Sonics was like discovering a part of history or some sort of secret rock 'n' roll lineage that had been kind of buried. Bob Bennett's insane, driving drumming; Larry Parypa's totally raw guitar; and then Gerry Roslie's screaming, or singing . he's one of the best rock 'n' roll singers ever.

I can't really tell for sure, but I'm sure the fact they grew up in Tacoma and were teens into chicks and hot cars had a lot to do with it [their sound].

All you have to do is listen to the Sonics to understand what a great band they are. You don't need anybody else to back that up. If you hear it and you don't understand what's going on and it doesn't move you, then rock 'n' roll in general is not for you, and you're better off listening to Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Happy Birthday, Mudhoney!

20 years and counting!

That's a long time to maintain a band, or any sort of a relationship. Just look at how few Northwest bands have lasted any longer: The Melvins, The Walkabouts and Girl Trouble - I'm probably forgetting a few, but if I am, it's not many (do The Ventures count? And the list of active bands a little younger than them is down to about Pearl Jam at this point). It's a testament to something - the quality of the music, the intra-band relationships, inertia ... je ne sais quoi. Thanks to Mudhoney for all the great music. I'm thankful that I was able to witness some of it. Here's to many more years of the same.

Today also marks the 10-year anniversary of this site. If I had known back in 1997 how much time I'd end up putting into it, maybe I wouldn't have started in the first place. I'm glad I did though; for the most past it's been tons of fun. Thanks to everyone who's written in with information, help and suggestions. I'm just one guy with a computer - the vast majority of what's on here has come through the generosity of others.
