The Monkeywrench
Tom Price, in an interview, on prospects for The Monkeywrench:

Oh I could definitely play [Monkeywrench songs, physically]. I'd say Monkeywrench is actually pretty similar to what we're doing now in the Desert Classic. I could hack it. But, Tim, who is one of my greatest friends of all-time, he's into playing Irish music these days. You know, painting and playing acoustic music. He's fibbing a little bit there - when he comes up here he plays with some folk musicians and performs in acoustic, Celtic music circles. I'm sure he meant in terms of loud, electric rock music. But I don't know. Periodically there's talk of getting back together and doing some Monkeywrench, and maybe at some point it might happen, but I think for now, Tim's just off in another world.

The Thrown Epps

Mark plays drums in The Thrown Epps, a hybrid of his two previous bands, The Thrown Ups and Mr. Epp and the Calculations. Listen at weedshare.com. The Stranger has the backstory:

In recent grunge basement happenings, a supergroup-of-sorts. "the Thrown Epps". was born on the seventh night of March this year of our Lord (Satan) 2014. On that fateful night, members of two '80s Seattle bands of the proto-grunge persuasion.the Thrown Ups and Mr. Epp and the Calculations.jammed to the relief of the grunge-nostalgia-crazed everywhere. As those schooled in the "pre-grunge" armory may recognize, the line-up for the night was Jo Smitty ("Mr. Epp," sorta), Mark Arm (of both bands; Mudhoney), as well as Leighton Beezer (aka Satan), Scott Schickler, Mike Faulhaber, and Ed Fotheringham of the Thrown Ups. In their heyday, both bands made genre-molding, mind-rigging weirdo rock, but 30 years later one might wonder if the weird is still alive.

What happened that night in Mike's basement surfaced in a recording.unedited, unmixed, and untitled. The riffs are heavily sprawled, the vocals indiscernible; some might even call these songs intentionally directionless. As vocalist Jo Smitty said, it's "kinda like standing in a basement with a Rainier in your hand." There's nothing sing-along-able here, no thoughtfully composed synth beds, alpha-jungle-dub beat drops, or anything the Mumfords 'n' Skrillex-saturated popular music landscape might condone. Is this the worst band in the world? Is it even a band? This is a record for those times when only the most raw and disgruntled sounds will suffice.

Happy Birthday, Mudhoney!

Mudhoney is 26 years old today, commemorating the first band practice held by the original four - Dan, Mark, Matt, and Steve.

There are already events planned for 2014. They have shows scheduled in Seattle, South America, and the East Coast. And, notably, Dan will be inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame for his time spent being the driving force behind Nirvana.

This site is also celebrating its birthday today. Thanks to everyone who's written in with something to share with their fellow fans. This site wouldn't be half of what it is without people kindly doing that. And, the site has a New Year's Resolution - the archive of things that never quite got posted will be (slowly?) emptied and shared this year. Stay tuned.
