What's Going on With Mudhoney: Both Mark and Steve have said that there will be some Mudhoney shows in the Northwest in the near future. Mark gave the reason for Lukin playing with them as, "Matt wants to do some shows." Mark has also said that there's a possibility of a Mudhoney tour next summer. Additionally, Tim has said that The Monkeywrench will tour the East Coast in the Spring.

Take from this what you want, but remember that other relatively recent plans had Mudhoney playing the Reading Festival in 1999, and The Monkeywrench touring Australia and New Zealand in March of this year.

New Side Project: In the newest edition of his newsletter (5.2), Jack Endino has the following to say about Dan's new side project:

I've started playing again, a bit. Looks like I am now bassist for Wellwater Conspiracy. But while Matt is busy touring as Pearl Jam's drummer, myself and guitarist John McBain (ex-Hater, ex-Monster Magnet, ex-etc) have started a side-project called Brotherhood of the Electric. Dan Peters is drumming for us, and Ben Sheperd is on vocals. We are opening for Nebula at the Crocodile in Seattle on Aug 31st... my first gig in two years. Most of the set is really obscure 60's garage/psych cover tunes done in a sort of Who Live at Leeds style.

More information about the show is on the Tour page.

The reissues will be slightly different from the originals, making it possible to differentiate the two. The largest difference will be the bar code printed on the reissue. Note that this is Superfuzz Bigmuff, rather than Superfuzz Bigmuff plus Early Singles.

New Sytrchnines on TV: KIRO TV in Seattle aired some footage of the New Strychnines in a broadcast about Northwest artists at EMP during last night's news telecast. Shown was a short clip of them rehearsing "The Witch" along with Steve and Tom talking about the influence of The Sonics. It's probable that the piece will be re-aired this weekend.

Wednesday, June 21
News From Endino: In his recent newsletter (5.1), Jack Endino had the following to say about working with Mudhoney in April:

First, news. I had the pleasure of working with Mudhoney in the studio again after 6 years. They booked three days with me to record a couple songs "for a single", they said. Steve was going to overdub the bass parts. Then I got an email from Wayne Kramer, who you may recall was a guitarist for the mighty MC5 circa 1972, saying how much he was "looking forward to working with me on the sessions." Huh?? I had to call Mark Arm and say, hey, what's the story? Turns out that Wayne works as an A+R guy for an internet record company called MusicBlitz.com, and they had commissioned Mudhoney (who are now free agents, having been dropped by Warner's) to give them one song, to be exclusively available on the Musicblitz.com web site. Wayne was going to fly up to Seattle to produce, which implied therefore that I would be "merely" engineering. To which I said, if Wayne Kramer wants to produce Mudhoney while I engineer, who the hell am I to argue? You don't really "produce" Mudhoney, anyway. I figured, I'll just do my thing. As it turned out, Wayne is a sweet guy, and he ended up playing bass on three Mudhoney songs, one of which, "Inside Job", is now available at Musicblitz.com. A second song, "The Straight Life," was finished and mixed; a third, untitled, has no vocals yet but does have Wayne contributing a guitar solo. So much fun was had by all that I think Mudhoney (the three who remain) will probably come in later in the year and do a few more songs... and maybe, just maybe, they will eventually have enough for an album. They're in no hurry, and like it that way. Right now, Mark and Steve are busy with Monkeywrench.

Friday, June 16
EMP Compilation: The EMP/Sub Pop double CD spanning the history of rock in the Northwest will be available on June 23rd at EMP's website (www.experience.org) and at the EMP gift shop. In addition to the Mudhoney track ("Touch Me I'm Sick), a Green River song ("This Town") will be included. The full tracklisting is as follows:

Thursday, June 1(Updated 6/16/00)
New Strychnines Lineup and Shows: From Mark, here's new information on the New Strychnines:
It's going to be:

and maybe Craig Florey on sax (we haven't made contact with him yet).

It looks like we'll be playing three shows: a private party for EMP employees on Tuesday, June 20, a free show for anyone who want to go [tickets have a base price of $15.00 and are available through Ticketmaster], and maybe a show at The Crocodile Cafe, the dates I've heard are June 29 or July 14.

We're going to play Sonics originals like "The Witch," "Psycho," "Boss Hoss," "Strychnine," "Cinderella," "He's Waitin'," "Shot Down," "I'm Goin' Home," "High Time," "Like No Other Man," "Maintaining My Cool," "You've Got Your Head on Backwards" and "The Hustler," plus maybe their versions of "Have Love Will Travel" and "Louie Louie" (totally great and unique version).

The private party that Mark is talking about may be the party for EMP charter members rather than one for employees. More on this when it's known.

6/16/00: The private party is for people in the music industry. The venue is unknown, but Neko Case played a similar party for EMP last week that was held at I-Spy in Seattle.

Monday, May 29
New Release: The Experience Music Project, in conjunction with Sub Pop, will release a Northwest rock music compilation album that spans from the 1950's to the present. The album, which will be released around the time of the museum's opening (June 23rd), will contain "Touch Me I'm Sick."

Saturday, May 27(Updated 5/29/00)
New Strychnine: Mudhoney has finally been confirmed as part of the Sonics tribute as part of the Experience Music Project (www.experience.org) shows in Seattle in the end of June. Dan, Mark and Steve will be in New Strychnine for a show on June 25 at Memorial Stadium. Also on the bill are Screaming Trees, Built to Spill, Subset, The Fastbacks, and The Young Fresh Fellows. Tickets have a base price of $15.00 and are available from Ticketmaster.

Tuesday, May 16
Mark on PJ: In an article about Pearl Jam in today's Addicted to Noise (www.addict.com), Mark had the following to say about the band:

They're smart in pulling back on the hype thing. You see all these other bands shoved down people's throats, from the Spin Doctors on down. They have a huge album, and then when their next album comes out, no one gives a shit. (Pearl Jam) pulled back, and there was a mystery to them.

(Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament) were involved with the hardcore punk scene (and) the whole DIY ethic was very much a part of what (Ament) was doing. Both guys took an active interest in what their bands were doing and where they were going. By they time they started working with major labels, they had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted and weren't about to give up control.

Wednesday, April 19
EMP: April's Experience Music Project (www.experience.org) E-Update has the following information on work that Mark has been doing at the museum: "Mudhoney's Mark Arm has been busy with EMP producers recording the narration to the Northwest Gallery's punk segment. Among the many things he discussed were his own musical influences, including Portland's seminal Wipers." Steve has also been contributing information on skateboarding and '60's rock in the Northwest, as also donated one of his blue Fender Mustangs.

Sunday, April 9
Bundle of Hiss: The Bundle of Hiss album, Sessions (LOV003), will be released by Loveless records on May 2nd. The only format available will be CD.

Friday, March 31
Chats Archived: If you missed last night's Mudhoney chat or last month's Sno-Dad chat with Steve, both have been archived at the worldstream.com website.

Sunday, March 27
News From Endino: In his newest newsletter (5.0), Jack Endino (www.endino.com) has the following to say about the Bundle of Hiss record and Mudhoney's plans to record:

I have spent the past year sporadically resurrecting and assembling material for a Bundle of Hiss CD using old tapes that had never been mixed, and in some cases, cassettes of old mixes from master tapes that have long since disappeared. Most were from eight-track tapes recorded by Ric Vaughn in his long-dead Audio Design studio, '87-88; some were old tapes I did at Reciprocal in '86. Some tapes had to be baked in order to get 'em to play long enough to transfer 'em to digital so I could mix 'em. With help and patience from three of the ex-members (Danny Peters, drums; Jamie Lane, vocals and guitar; Kurt Danielson, bass) I finally finished this labor of love, which will be released soon, on, amusingly enough, a new label called Loveless Records.

...speaking of members of Mudhoney, they have indicated their intention to cut a couple of songs with me in the near future, as a three-piece.

Thursday, March 23
Mudhoney to Record: Word from Steve with respect to Mudhoney's current plans: "We're still practicing a lot and writing songs to record in April...(we're) recording because musicblitz.com wants an exclusive song, so we figured we might as well come up with a few and maybe do a single or something."

Thursday, March 23
New Monkeywrench Shows: According to Steve, The Monkeywrench have added the following shows to their schedule:

The first two shows will be headlining dates, at a club TBD. The last two will be supporting Pearl Jam. Tickets for the last two shows are already on sale, and nearly sold out, if they haven't already.

Additionally, there's a chance that they will do a John Peel session on 5/28, "or record somewhere else for the fuck of it."

Tuesday, March 21(Updated 3/23/00)
Internet Chat: On Thursday, March 30 at 7PM PST, Mudhoney will do an audio/video chat at Worldstream. The requirements for the chat are the same as the Sno-Dad one with Steve last month. Requirements include a Netscape/Microsoft 4.x browser and either RealPlayer or Media Player.

The chat is expected to last for about an hour, and Dan, Mark and Steve will be present.

Tuesday, March 14
Monkeywrench .mp3s: Estrus has posted two .mp3s from Electric Children - "Solar Revelations" and "In the Days of the Five" - to their website in the "Sounds" section.

Tuesday, March 14
Monkeywrench Shows: The Monkeywrench will be playing the following shows:

Monday, February 28
Internet Broadcast Tomorrow/Mudhoney Writing: Word from Steve: "Just to let you know, I'm hosting a web show about The Sno-Dad, a backcountry snowboard without bindings, tomorrow. We'll be playing some new Monkeywrench stuff, and me and Steve Dukich, one of the inventors and ex-Steel Wool frontman will perform "I'm a Sno-Dad" on accoustic guitars. Should be odd. And Mark, Dan and I are getting together in a couple days to work on a couple new songs as a trio...Should be odd."

That broadcast is at 4PM PST TOMORROW, Tuesday, February 29, though the website says 4AM PST. You need to be registered at the site to participate, so you might want to take care of that before hand. From the website concerning system requirements: "To use your WorldStream Intranet tools, you must be using a compatible browser that is Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher. In addition, your browser must also have cookies and JavaScript enabled." The event will be broadcast in both Real and Windows Media formats.

Monday, February 28
Chat Highlights: While getting the full transcript for the chat online is being wored out, here are some highlights from the insound.com chat on 2/24:

Monday, February 14
March to Fuzz Errors: Besides the "March to/from Fuzz" error, there's a few more small mistakes in March to Fuzz, some more anal-retentive than others. Here's a list of them, along with some words from Mark about it:

Things were bouncing around between Steve, myself, and two (sometimes three) different people at Sub Pop. Often times I would make a correction, like get the fuckin' year right for the "You Got it" photo fer christsakes, and it would get corrected. then i'd see a later copy and the mistake would be back in. After a while i just gave up with the fine print. A classic case of too many cooks in the kitchen. I'm still pretty damnned pleased with the outcome.

Sunday, February 13
Wylde Ratttz News: The Wylde Ratttz have a very nascent website, www.wylderatttz.com. Additionally, the Wylde Ratttz album that has been completed since mid-1998 will finally be released. From Mark: "Thurston (Moore) is putting it out on exstatic peace. I'm not sure what the details are of how they got the tapes from London, but at least now it'll see the light of day."

Thursday, February 10
March to/from Fuzz: You may have noticed that the version of "March to Fuzz" on March to Fuzz doesn't sound the same as the version on the split single with Gas Huffer. From Mark, here's the deal:

You're right about "March to Fuzz", it's the one glaring fuck up (so far). That's not "March to Fuzz" on the comp of the same name, but "March from Fuzz" which was a cleaner more reverbed out, surfier version of the same song which we recorded at the time, but completely forgot about. When Steve was dealing with the DATs he figured "March from Fuzz" was a missprint on the part of Conrad Uno. Oh well, it's never been released before.

Wednesday, February 2
Chat Rescheduled: The on-line chat at Insound that was originally scheduled for January 17th has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 24. The details remain the same: The chat begins at 6pm PST. No special software is required to participate. If you miss the chat, it will be eventually archived at the site.

Tuesday, February 1
Steve Reviews a Record: In the current issue of The Rocket, Steve has the following review of Paul Revere and the Raiders' Greatest Hits (Columbia/Legacy CD):

Paul Revere and the Raiders get a raw deal sometimes. The combined weight of the silly clothes, Dick Clark's blessing, the teeny-bopper hits and 20 years on the Holiday Inn oldies circuit has taken quite a toll on their hipster credibility. This is a real shame because the band made some of the toughest, coolest American rock 'n' roll of the '60s. Paul Revere's newly updated Greatest Hits is much too short to tell the whole story, but it's a great introduction to their hit-making years of '65-'67. It starts off with their take on "Louie Louie," not the best version, but it serves as a reminder that they started off bashing out raw R&B in the great Northwest. By the time of "Louie Go Home," their sound was in place. Gone was singer Mark Lindsay's screaming and sax, replaced with a breathy snarl; the piano was traded in for a Vox organ and the hits started coming. "Kicks," "Hungry," "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone," "Just Like Me," "Good Thing" -- this stuff moves! Producer Terry Melcher created the blueprint for the more ambitious garage bands: one part British Invasion, one part Southern California harmonies, one part Northwest frat-blast, one part blue-eyed soul and a sprinkle of exotic fairy dust. There's a bit of schmaltz on the CD with songs like "Melody for an Unknown Girl" and "Legend of Paul Revere," but that should be expected -- Paul Revere and the Raiders were on TV every week in period costumes, for God's sake! What's amazing is how they still managed to make great rock 'n' roll at the intersection of Art and Commerce. Can anybody do that today? I haven't seen it.

Thursday, January 19
Monkeywrench Single: According to Estrus (www.estrus.com), on March 7th they will release a Monkeywrench 7" single, Sugarman (ES7149), backed with a song that will not be on Electric Children. The single, with sleeve design by Art Chantry, will be limited to 2,000 copies.

Wendesday, January 19
Another New Release Update: The BBC album, titled Here Comes Sickness/The Best of the BBC Recordings, will be released in the UK on 2/7/00, one week later than previously stated. The track listing is as follows:

Tracks 1-4 are from the 5/9/89 BBC Radio 1 John Peel Sessions. Tracks 5-8 are from the 5/95 BBC Radio 1 Steve Lamacq Evening Sessions. Tracks 9-21 are from the 8/27/95 Reading Festival Appearance, most of which was broadcast live by the BBC. The Reading appearance is missing at least one song, Generation Spokesmodel. Tracks 1, 3 and 4 were previously released on the 1989-1993: The John Peel Sub Pop Sessions compilation album (Sub Pop, 1994). Track 7 was previously released on the Trademark of Quality promo compilation CD (Reprise, 1995).

Tuesday, January 18 (Updated)
Another New Release: On January 31st, Pinnacle/Strange Fruit will release a new Mudhoney album (SFRSCD090): a collection of the 5/9/89 BBC sessions (By Her Own Hand, If I Think, Here Comes Sickness, You Make Me Die) the 1995 BBC Sessions (Poisoned Water, Editions of You, maybe more) and most of the 8/27/95 Reading Festival concert (incomplete show setlist: Judgment Rage..., This Gift, Into Yer Shtik, Touch Me I'm Sick, Fuzzgun '91, 1995, Hate the Police), less Generation Spokesmodel. The liner notes were written by Steve. It will be released in the United States in a few months on a Warner Brothers subsidiary. If you can't wait that long, there's always Amazon UK.

Thursday, January 13
Monkeyrench Tour/Single: The March to Fuzz press kit has the following information on The Monkeywrench's tour plans and the release of a single:

The Monkeywrench have minimal touring plans, limited to those shows that the band members might somehow construe as "fun." And, it looks as though tours through Australia/New Zealand in March 2000 (with the concurrent release of a single in Australia!), and Japan at an as-yet-to-be-determined time will most definately qualify.

Tuesday, January 11
Chat Delayed: The Insound chat, which was scheduled for January 17th, is being rescheduled. The new date is tentatively Sunday, January 23rd, but that is far from certain.

Thursday, January 6
Monkeywrench Show: The Monkeywrench will play the Vegas Shakedown Punk Weekender the weekend of August 11-13 in Las Vegas, NV. Tickets for the three day festival are $62 and can be purchased here, at the festival's site. Other bands scheduled to play include the Cheater Slicks, Dead Moon, the Donnas, The Murder City Devils, and Nashville Pussy.
