Mudhoney Tourbook, 2006
Tourbook

3/7/06 Easy Street Records (Queen Anne). Seattle, WA (40 min)
Attendance: 200
Set: Where is the Future?, It is Us, Suck You Dry, Endless Yesterdays, Who You Drivin' Now?, I Saw the Light, A Brief Celebration..., Inside Job, Empty Shells, You Got it, Hard on for War
Notes: This was a free performance at a record store on the day that they released Under a Billion Suns. Endless Yesterdays, A Brief Celebration..., and Empty Shells are premiered. Steve has a problem with his guitar as soon as they start, and they play the opening song while he fades in and out. Afterwards, they take a lengthy break, as the guys make small talk while Steve exhorts them to be entertaining. When Steve is ready to go, he provides the crowd with the following joke: "Knock, knock. Who's There? Chicken. Chicken Who? Chicken," leading the guys to wonder why he was telling them to be more entertaining. After A Brief Celebration..., Steve remarks that the song is a "politically charged instrumental" (in reference to reviews of Under a Billion Suns) and then adds, "Darn that Thatcher!" You Got it is played more slowly than normal. After the show, the band took a short break, then signed records for people at the front of the store.

3/14/06 KEXP Studios. Seattle, WA

Notes: The band played a set and participated in an interview that was broadcast by KEXP 90.3 FM, Seattle.

3/17/06 The Crocodile Cafe. Seattle, WA (75 min)
Attendance: 400
Supported By: The Makers, The Stabbs, Parchman Farm
Set: Where is the Future?, It is Us, I Saw the Light, Endless Yesterday, Empty Shells, Hard on for War, A Brief Celebration..., Let's Drop in, On the Move, In Search of, Blindspots
Encore: Sweet Young Thing, Touch Me I'm Sick, Inside Job, The Straight Life, Who You Drivin' Now?, You Got it, Suck You Dry, In 'N' Out of Grace, Hate the Police
Notes: Let's Drop in and Blindspots are premiered. On the occassion of the record release party for Under a Billion Suns, the band plays the record in order. Some guys are shouting out requests for other songs, so Guy takes a second before Empty Shells to explain the concept to them. Early in the encore, they hit a rough patch. During Touch Me I'm Sick, Mark misses the transition from the first pre-chorus to the chorus, causing everyone to crack up through the rest of the song. No one is playing the same song during The Straight Life, and after they somehow keep it together through the end, Mark says, "We really should have practiced that one," and Steve adds, "it sounded like a Red Kross song." Dan takes a wild solo on In 'N' Out of Grace, while Mark does an accompanying jig and Guy calls out "Riverdance!" (the show takes place on St. Patrick's Day.) After they finish the song, they're about ready to leave the stage, but Mark calls out an audible for Hate the Police. Steve says that the song is for the Irish, since so many Irish are police. No One Has is on the setlist to open the encore, but not played.

3/18/06 Dante's. Portland, OR (85 min)
Attendance: 600
Supported By: The Stabbs, The Divining Rods
Soundcheck: Let's Drop in, Endless Yesterday, No One Has, Where is the Future?
Set: Where is the Future?, It is Us, I Saw the Light, (Empty Shells), Endless Yesterday, Empty Shells, Hard on for War, A Brief Celebration..., Let's Drop in, On the Move, In Search of, Blindspots
Encore: No One Has, Sweet Young Thing, Touch Me I'm Sick, Inside Job, Here Comes Sickness, Who You Drivin' Now?, You Got it, Suck You Dry, In 'N' Out of Grace, Hate the Police
Notes: This was the second of the two record release parties for Under a Billion Suns. They play the record in order for the main set. Steve starts up Empty Shells, and is joined in by Mark before they realize that that's not the fourth song on the record. Mark tells the crowd that "It won't flow" if they don't play the songs in the proper order, and they go into Endless Yesterday. When they come out for the encore, Mark jokes, "Now that we've got the new stuff out of the way..." and Steve waves around a copy of the setlist while saying, "We're not doing the set that Sub Pop tells us to" (they switched The Straight Life for Here Comes Sickness on the printed setlist, and added Hate the Police). For the encore, they keep up with the theme, and Mark calls out the first song on their first record, the a-side to their first single, the b-side to their first single, and finally, "The seventh song from our last record." Guy dedicates Here Comes Sickness "for Jim and John - the tape geeks." The intro to Who You Drivin' Now? catches Steve by surprise, and by the time they hit the first chorus, he waves everyone to stop. They get ready to restart it, and Steve refuses: "That one's jinxed now. Fuck that song." The other guys can't believe it, so they sit around for a minute or two having a friendly argument, but Steve is recalcitrant. Dan even goes so far as to do the drum into to the song again, but no one joins in. During the solo in In 'N' Out of Grace, Mark and Steve start doing their best "I am overcome by the power of my own rocking-ness" guitar poses, that culminate in Mark crouching under Steve's legs while playing, and Steve taking the opportunity to sit down on Mark for a piggy-back ride.

Set: Into the Drink, It is Us, You Got it, Where is the Future?, Hard-on for War, Sweet Young Thing, Touch Me I'm Sick, Where the Flavor is, I Have to Laugh, If I Think, Sonic Infusion, Beneath the Valley.../Here Comes Sickness, Blindspots
Encore: Suck You Dry, In 'N' Out of Grace, Hate the Police
Notes: This show was in observance of The Crocodile Cafe's 15th Anniversary. Mudhoney also played the club's 10th Anniversary celebration on 5/11/01. Mark observes after Hard-on for War that it's also the 15th anniversary of "that fucking pole" (which blocks the view of a decent number of people every show). Suck You Dry is on the setlist as the opener, but is replaced by the unlisted Into the Drink. Steve breaks a string shortly into the second song of the set, which may be a new record for quickness. He introduces Touch Me I'm Sick by talking about how it was written on Mercer Island (where he grew up), and Mark adds that he was there and they ate cake. Later, Mark introduces If I Think by talking about where that song was written - "On a bus somewhere between Kirkland and Totem Lake (where he grew up), so, Juanita?" and adds that Juanita is home of his favorite Jack in the Box restaurant, not for the special food, but for sentimental reasons. After all that, Steve can't get the intro to the song right, to the point that he tells the other guys that he wants to give up and move on. He finally gets it, but its very slow, so they play at that speed for the verses, with Dan using a different, more conventional drum pattern than normal, and then go to normal speed for the chorus and solo.

6/15/06 Maggie O'Toole's. Lakewood, WA (85 min)
Supported By: Melba Toast
Set: Into the Drink, It is Us, You Got it, Where is the Future?, Hard-on for War, Sweet Young Thing, Touch Me I'm Sick, Where the Flavor is, I Have to Laugh, If I Think, Sonic Infusion, Beneath the Valley.../Here Comes Sickness, Blindspots
Encore: Suck You Dry, Who You Drivin' Now?, In 'N' Out of Grace
Notes: They do If I Think slow like on 6/10/06, but Dan modifies his drum beat again so that its halfway between the recorded version and a straight-ahead pattern. Before Blindspots, Mark says that they wanted to come down to the venue a few weeks ago for the porn star party, but that would involve getting raped by their step-dads, doing lines of coke, and feeling bad..."Other people's hell is our amusement."

Encore: Into the Drink, Who You Drivin' Now, Suck You Dry, Hate the Police
Notes: They hit the stage to the dulcet tones of AC/DC's For Those About to Rock. After they do a quick soundcheck, Dan says, "Let's play some music, boys," and Mark asks the crowd a Paul Stanley-esque "Are you ready to rock?" Mark keeps holding the last note of Sonic Infusion, and holding, and holding, and finally the other guys come back in for a proper ending. He changes the lyric of Beneath the Valley... to "The spitting image of Mike Maker" (singer for The Makers). They come to the end of the show, and Mark asks "Gee, I wonder what we'll play next?" and Steve announces that they're doing a "Texas folk tune" as they go into Hate the Police.

Notes: After having taken the stage, but before starting to play, Mark has to leave to have his guitar attended to. Steve announces that the crowd is in his hands now...and Dan's...and Guy's. When Mark retakes the stage, Steve says that the crowd is in Mark's hands now. In the middle of the set, Mark says that they don't do Pearl Jam's Even Flow. Mark bungles the first verse of Hate the Police.

Notes: After the first song, Mark tells the crowd, "Thank you, thank you, very much. Your applause may come a little too soon." When they come out for the encore, they're tuning up and someone yells for them to play Gas Huffer's 'Hot Cakes.' Mark: "We don't know 'Hot Cakes' by Gas Huffer. We do know that Joe from Gas Huffer is in the house though!" Longtime Seattle band and Mudhoney touring mates Gas Huffer had broken up at the start of the year, and Joe moved to New York City for a job.

Notes: After the main set, the crowd chants, "Mud-ho-ney!" Mark comes back onstage and comments, "we've been standing for 10 minutes waiting for some kind of chant to start. Chanting is about all we can do. Before You Got it, he tells the crowd that they have to waif for "old three-fingers Turner" to get going. Then, after Fix Me, he turns to Steve and says, "We've got to find some way to stretch that one out more." People begin stage diving during Hate the Police, and Mark playfully "butts" one of them off the stage.

Encore: If I Think, Suck You Dry, Fix Me, Hate the Police
Notes: Steve draws out the ending to most every song, which leads to repeated audience confusion as to when to clap. After one such ending, Mark introduces him to the crowd as "Two Hands Turner." Guy has amp troubles at the start of If I Think, and while he attends to that, Mark tells the crowd: "Seattle is one of our favorite places to play. Every time we come through here we have a good show. I haven't been to Seattle since ... sometime Friday." Steve jumps in with, "I thought you were going to say the '90's."
