Mudhoney Tourbook, 2009
Tourbook

1/10/09 The Sunset Tavern. Seattle, WA (40 min)
Attendance: 200
Supporting: Girl Trouble
Set: The Money Will Roll..., I'm Now, The Lucky Ones, Next Time, Inside Out..., The Open Mind, Street Waves, And the Shimmering Light, The New Meaning, Tales of Terror, Fix Me
Notes: This is a private party for a friend of the band who is moving to Los Angeles. When they hit the stage, Mark introduces The Money Will Roll... by saying that it's about doing just that. Steve manages to break an A string on the song. They do a set of one-guitar songs: most of The Lucky Ones and three covers. Many people bring their young children to the show, and the entire front row is made up of kids in grade school or younger.

Set: The Money will Roll..., I'm Now, The Lucky Ones, Next Time, Inside Out..., The Open Mind, Street Waves, Touch Me I'm Sick, And the Shimmering Light, New Meaning, Tales of Terror, Fix Me, Hate the Police
Notes: They play a set of songs that don't include Mark on guitar, plus 'Touch Me I'm Sick,' which is done without Mark on guitar for the first known time. The venue is a smallish dive bar with a tiny stage, and they wanted to come down and rip through a punk-type set (and also maybe not have to schlep Mark's gear down and back).

5/15/09 "Nelsonville Art & Music Festival". Nelsonville, OH
Supported By: Weedghost, T-Model Ford, Wheels on Fire, Bygones, Casual Future
Notes: Mudhoney played the first day of this three-day festival.

5/16/09 The Grog Shop. Cleveland, OH

Set: The Money Will Roll..., I'm Now, The Lucky Ones, Next Time, Inside Out, You Got it, Suck You Dry, Inside Job, Blinding Sun, Sweet Young Thing, Judgement Rage..., Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, F.D.K., This Gift, Hard-on for War, When Tomorrow Hits, In 'N' Out of Grace, Hate the Police
Encore: The Open Mind, Street Waves, Tales of Terror, Fix Me
Notes: Judgment Rage... is played for the first known time since 12/15/01. Guy takes a peak at the setlist and quizzically asks, "Inside Out?" which cracks Mark and Steve up. As soon as they start Blinding Sun, Mark breaks the integral D string on his guitar, which Mark also finds humorous. During the break in In 'N' Out of Grace, Mark walks behind Guy, and lifts up his shirt to check out his butt, which Steve finds humorous. Steve throws in more noise during the break than normal. Mark dedicates Street Waves to "the fine city of Cleveland" - hometown of Pere Ubu.

7/10/09 "West Seattle Summer Festival". SW Alaska St and 42nd Ave SW. Seattle, WA (75 min)
Attendance: 1,500

Encore: Street Waves, Tales of Terror, Fix Me
Notes: Mudhoney played the first day of this free three-day community festival. Let it Slide is played for the first known time since 10/20/01. West Seattle resident Lukin is in attendance, as are Tom Price and Johnny Sangster. The band is introduced by county executive candidate Dow Consadine, who tells an anecdote about road tripping with Mark to see a show in Oregon in a convoy of crappy cars. Before Hate the Police, Mark suggests that everyone stick aronud the area to shop local businesses, including the idea that people buy a cupcake there (pointing down the street) and then get it gift wrapped at West Seattle's own gift-wrapping store. The PA falls out during the song, coming back just in time for the last note. As a result of the muted finish, they come back for an impromptu encore, and add Tales of Terror to that when Steve calls an audible for it after Street Waves.

7/29/09 "Songs for Eating and Drinking". The Sorrento Hotel. Seattle, WA (10 min)
Supported By: Steve Turner, The Dutchess and the Duke, Rocky Volotalo, Dave Bazan, John Roderick, The Blakes, Sera Cahoone
Set: Tales of Terror, (one other song)
Notes: On the hottest day in Seattle's recorded history (103F), Mudhoney plays the invite-only "Songs for Eating and Drinking" series, where musicians come together to eat a fancy meal and share songs.

9/18/09 "Musicfest Northwest". Dante's. Portland, OR (85 min)
Attendance: 400
Supported By: The Zeros, The Soft Pack, Rapids
Soundcheck: (Baby Help Me Forget), (Oblivion), (Oblivion), Oblivion, Street Waves
Encore: Street Waves, Fix Me
Notes: Mudhoney played part of "Musicfest Northwest," a Portland festival taking place in venues across the city. The festival title is shortened to "MFNW" in signage, and as they hit the stage, Mark says, "It's great to be in the Motherfucking Northwest!" Guy says says thanks to the applauding crowd in different languages periodically, and each time Mark intentionally gets the language wrong and acts surprised that Guy speaks it (e.g. "Gracias." "I didn't know you spoke French."). Oblivion is played for the first time sine 9/7/01. Steve mixes up his solo on Blinding Sun, changing it from the version on record. Half the band hits the verse on Judgment Rage... while the other half is still on the verse. Dan calls it, and they re-start. The crowd starts up an AC/DC-style chant to accompany Dan's solo in In 'N' Out of Grace. Mark dedicates Fix Me to Garrett from The Press Corps and The Fluid, who's celebrating a birthday.

Notes on Europe: Not all of the below setlists are complete, but Mudhoney played roughly similar sets each night. A few songs were swapped out here and there, but if a setlist is missing or incomplete, it's fairly close to a complete one listed.

10/9/09 HMV Picture House. Edinburgh, Scotland
Supported By: The Vaselines, St. Deluxe
Set: Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, Sweet Young Thing, Suck You Dry, Judgment Rage..., When Tomorrow Hits, In 'N' Out of Grace (set incomplete and possibly out of order)

10/10/09 TJ's (Woodhouse Liberal Club). Leeds, England
Supported By: The Heads
Soundcheck: Oblivion, A Thousand Forms...
Set: The Money Will Roll, I'm Now, The Lucky Ones, Next Time, Inside Out, You Got it, Suck You Dry, Oblivion, Inside Job, Blinding Sun, Sweet Young Thing, Let it Slide, Judgment Rage..., Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, F.D.K., Get into Yours, Hard-on for War, When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Hate the Police
Encore: The Open Mind, Street Waves, Fix Me
Notes: During Next Time, someone in the crowd grabs Mark's mic cord. Mark tries to get it back, but it gets disconnected. Mark takes a look at his now useless mic, and responds to the situation by angrily grabbing the offending party by the hair. The crowd is rambunctious all evening, and Mark dedicates Hate the Police to all those who get on stage, but leave their shoes there, and asks that they take their shoes with them. He changes a line of the song to, "You can't find justice, it'll find shoes." During The Open Mind, someone lands on Mark's back just as he's singing, "what the fuck...?" which lends a little extra oompf to the line.

Encore: Here Comes Sickness, Tales of Terror, Fix Me
Notes: During Suck You Dry, a portion of the crowd starts pelting Mark with plastic beer cups. When the song ends, he gives them a sarcastic, "Thanks, kids." A stage diver takes flight from Guy's side of the stage during This Gift. The crowd isn't there for him and he humorously crashes to the floor. Mark and Steve chuckle about this together while wrapping up the song.

Notes: This show has a similar setlist as Amsterdam the previous night. During the song before Sweet Young Thing, a stage-diver, dressed in his finest grunge-wear, accidentally hits Mark's mic stand, knocking it into Mark's face. A security guard roughly takes him away. Guy comments, "Yeah, you've got to be quick when you want to stage dive, else the bouncer's going to get you...part of the game." Mark adds, "And who would've thought we'd see Kurt Cobain here, alive after fifteen years!"

Notes: This was a book release party for Michael Lavine's Grunge. Levine shot the cover photo for the Mudhoney record, among others. When they come out, Guy needs a second, so Mark promotes Lavine's book, adding that it's strange to have a book full of people he knows. They then nail the "no Mark guitar" songs to start the show off on a high note. At the end of the main set, Mark again promotes "Mike's book of great photos...funny and sad photos...the sad ones are mostly band photos. Bands are sad...but not tonight! We had the Unnatural Helpers (Steve: Not sad.), we had Brothers of the Sonic Cloth (Not sad!), and we had Mudhoney (Not Sad!!)." Then someone from the crowd shouts for them to "Play some Dicks!" Mark and Steve quickly confirm that "Dicks are great!" and Steve talks about how he saw "a Youtube of the Dicks doing this song recently," leading the two to decide that they "don't own the song anymore." This is the longest show that Mudhoney has played, both in terms of length and number of songs. Kim Thayil and Bruce Pavitt are in attendance.
