Mudhoney Tourbook, 2012
Tourbook

1/6/12 The Bluebird Theater. Denver, CO
Supported By: The Fluid, The Purple Fluid
Set: Poisoned Water, Get into Yours, You Got it, Inside Job, This Gift, F.D.K., Hard-on for War, When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Judgment Rage..., Sweet Young Thing, No One Has, Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, The Open Mind, I'm Now, Next Time, Chardonnay, The Lucky Ones, Tales of Terror
Encore: If I Think, Here Comes Sickness, Hate the Police (w/Jello Biafra, Garrett Shavlik), Fix Me
Notes: This show was a benefit for the sons of Ricky Kulwicki. Ricky was guitarist for the Fluid and he passed away last year. The Fluid were and are great friends of Mudhoney. Garrett Shavlik (The Fluid, The Press Corps, G.B.D.) and Jello Biafra come out to sing backing vocals on 'Hate the Police.'

3/20/12 The Star Theater. Portland, OR (85 min)
Attendance: 250
Supported By: feedtime
Set: Poisoned Water, Get into Yours, You Got it, Inside Job, This Gift, F.D.K., Hard-on for War, When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Judgment Rage..., Sweet Young Thing, No One Has, Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, The Open Mind, I'm Now, Next Time, Chardonnay, The Lucky Ones, Tales of Terror (w/A Love Supreme)
Encore: Into the Drink, Who You Drivin' Now?, Here Comes Sickness, (Hate the Police), Fix Me
Notes: Mudhoney plays the first of two shows with feedtime, of whom Mark wrote, in part,

I'm confident that if you like Mudhoney, you will dig feedtime. feedtime were a huge influence on Mudhoney when we started and they remain an integral part of the Mudhoney Universe.

feedtime were scheduled to tour the US in 1989, but they broke up instead. I never got a chance to see them live, but they are coming to the US later this month and I'm stoked that Mudhoney will get to play with them in Portland and Seattle.

Poisoned Water has the new intro where they all hammer on an E chord instead of Steve playing the main riff. Chardonnay is the first of many songs to be restarted. As with the others, Mark asks Dan where to restart it from, and Dan points straight up and says, "From the top!" After the song, Mark says that it's based on a true story. Mark joins Steve on the intro to Here Comes Sickness, and Dan listens to Steve before pointing at him, saying "That's it," and starting the song proper. They get through Hate the Police until where the vocals come in, and switch it out for Fix Me. After that song, Steve wants to return to Hate the Police, Dan wants to finish, and Mark and Guy appear undecided. Since they can't play the song without a drummer, they call it a night.

3/21/12 The Tractor Tavern. Seattle, WA (85 min)
Attendance: 400
Supported By: feedtime
Set: Poisoned Water, Get into Yours, You Got it, Inside Job, This Gift, F.D.K., Hard-on for War, When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Judgment Rage..., Sweet Young Thing, No One Has, Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, The Open Mind, I'm Now, Next Time, Chardonnay, The Lucky Ones, Tales of Terror (w/A Love Supreme)
Encore: Into the Drink, Who You Drivin' Now?, Here Comes Sickness, Hate the Police, Fix Me
Notes: Mark joins feedtime on slide guitar (his Hagstrom), for the final song of their set. Alex Shumway of Green River, Mudhoney artist and Thrown Ups bandmate Ed Fotheringham, and Supersucker Eddie Spaghetti are in attendance. Ed bursts out in joy when they start You Got it, which is a total ripoff of the Thrown Ups' Bucking Retards. Then, during Touch Me I'm Sick, Ed stage dives - twice. Before Chardonnay, Dan gets Mark to introduce the song with, "This song is about something feedtime would never drink." Mark joins Guy's foray into John Coltrane's A Love Supreme, during the breakdown of Tales of Terror by singing along: "A love supreme! A love supreme!" Tales of Terror is also occasion for Ed's third stage dive of the evening. Since they restart songs so much less tonight than last night - only Chardonnay tonight! - they're able to fit one more song into the same amount of show time.

Notes on European Encores: Mudhoney didn't play an encore at every show (e.g., they didn't play encores at festivals). Where they did play encores, they generally played some combination of If I Think, Suck You Dry, Here Comes Sickness, The Money Will Roll..., Hate the Police, and Fix Me. They did Mudride, Get into Yours and Blinding Sun at one or two shows each, which are accounted for. They generally played Here Comes Sickness, Hate the Police and Fix Me in each encore, switching If I Think for Suck You Dry and adding The Money Will Roll... midway through the tour. The encores listed below are the ones that are specifically confirmed.

The song title makes reference to a section of the Bible, where Jesus comes a cross a woman in Nain who's only son has died. Being a widow, she now has no one to support her. Out of sadness for the widow's plight, Jesus raises her son from the dead.

Notes: The order of The Money Will Roll... and Hate the Police might have been switched. Steve and Guy grin while they extend the breakdown of Tales of Terror to new heights, leaving Mark hanging, waiting to come in. On some of the songs where Mark doesn't play guitar, his fly is down, which he attends to with Michael Jackson-style crotch grabs, before finally taking the chance between songs to turn around and zip up.

5/29/12 Het Depot. Leuven, Belgium
Supported By: Sleepy Sun
Set: Poisoned water, Into the Drink, You Got it, Slipping Away, This Gift, F.D.K., Hard-on for War, When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Judgment Rage..., Sweet Young Thing, No One Has, Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, I'm Now, Chardonnay, Song of Joy, Widow of Nain, Tales of Terror
Encore: Here Comes Sickness, Fix Me (encore incomplete)
Notes: Song of Joy - a song where Mark doesn't play guitar - is debuted. This is the last show at this venue, with the club moving to a new location. There are some removable stairs at the front of the stage on Guy's side, only the venue staff forgets to remove them before Mudhoney's set, leading many in the audience to think that they're there to help with stage diving. Some of these would-be stage divers think that it's a good idea to touch Guy's bass while they're up there, and Guy quickly makes it clear that this is a bad idea. A teenager has flowers for Mark, and Steve kindly gets them from the guy and passes them along. Eventually, a make-shift vase is found and it and the flowers are placed on Guy's amp. The venue is extremely hot, and the stage lights aren't helping things. Mark asks the lighting guy to turn off the lights at the back of the stage because it's killing them. The lighting guy responds to the request in mature fashion by turning off those lights, and then getting up and leaving the show room for the rest of the concert.

Notes: Mudhoney plays the second day of this four-day festival. There's a lot of "Gracias" to reach out to the audience in their native tongue, but also the occasional "Thank you." Before I'm Now, Mark observes, "It's really great to be back here in Barcelona. This is one of the most wonderful places in the world!" At the end of the set he says, "There's a guy over there in an OFF! shirt. There's a guy over there in a Black Flag shirt, which means..." and they slam into a set-closing Fix Me. When they finish up, Mark says that they enjoyed Lee Ranaldo's set, and Thee Oh Sees are coming up, so there's no need to go to a different stage.

6/1/12 Cabaret Aleatoire. Marseille, France

Supported By: The Treatment
Set: No One Has, Let it Slide, Sweet Young Thing, Judgment Rage..., Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, Slipping Away, Poisoned Water, Into the Drink, I Like it Small, You Got it, This Gift, F.D.K., Hard-on for War, When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Song of Joy, I'm Now, Chardonnay, The Open Mind, What to do with the Neutral, Widow of Nain, Tales of Terror
Encore: Suck You Dry, Blinding Sun, Fix Me, Hate the Police, Here Comes Sickness, If I Think, Get into Yours
Notes: 'I Like it Small' and 'What to Do with the Neutral' are premiered. At 30 songs, this show overtakes 11/13/09 as the most songs Mudhoney has played at a show. As Mark later explained, part of it was that the promoter had asked for a particularly long set, and part of it is that they wanted to play a lot of new songs without bumming people out by playing mostly songs they'd never heard before.

7/28/12 "Splendour in the Grass". Mix Up Stage. Belongil Fields. Byron Bay, Australia (60 min)

Notes: Mudhoney played the second day of this three-day festival. They drop the final song from the set (what that song is is unknown) when they run out of time.

9/1/12 Wild Buffalo House of Music. Bellingham, WA (80 min)
Attendance: 300
Supported By: Gallows Swing
Set: Slipping Away, Poisoned Water, You Got it, I Like it Small, This Gift, F.D.K., When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Judgment Rage..., No One Has, Sweet Young Thing, Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, I'm Now, Widow of Nain, Song of Joy, The Open Mind, Chardonnay, Tales of Terror (w/A Love Supreme)
Encore: Into the Drink, Suck You Dry, I Don't Remember You, The Money will Roll..., Hate the Police, Fix Me
Notes: I Don't Remember You - a song on which Mark doesn't play guitar - is premiered. During I'm Now, Steve plays long on the instrumental part before the second verse. This throws Mark off, who ends up repeating lines - extending the second verse, too. The guys have a laugh about it afterward. Before Into the Drink, Mark talks about how Renestair EJ recently passed away (he played with Mark and Guy in Bloodloss). Mark then prefaces I Don't Remember You by saying, "This song is super brand new, so if we blow it, be kind." Steve promptly breaks a string on his Mustang, bringing the song to a screeching halt: "This song is so new, the strings can't handle it." This is the first time Steve has played a Mustang on stage in maybe 10 years, and he mentions that he was looking forward to it. They close the show with three covers. As they're getting ready to start the last of these covers, Fix Me, Mark says that they just heard that there's a cover band in Bellingham named Monkeywrench (like Mark and Steve's side project), so "Now we're a cover band called Mudhoney."

9/2/12 "Bumbershoot". The Eve Alvord Theater. Seattle Center Grounds. Seattle, WA (30 min)
Attendance: 275
Also on Bill: (no one)
Set: I'm Now, Widow of Nain, I Don't Remember You, Song of Joy, The Open Mind, Chardonnay, F.D.K., I Like it Small, Slipping Away
Notes: This was a 2pm "show within a show" at Bumbershoot. The performance was broadcast on KEXP-FM and people at Bumbershoot had to obtain an additional ticket to attend this very small performance. The venue is a children's theater on the Seattle Center grounds. Six of the nine songs Mudhoney plays are new songs. They start up I Don't Remember You, but Guy cuts them off. The song is so new that he needs a reminder as to which song it is. He's told that this is the one that has an intro evocative of Jimi Hendrix's Crosstown Traffic (coupled with the line "Excuse me while I fill this shopping cart," that's evocative of "'Cuse me while I kiss the sky" in Hendrix's Purple Haze), and away they go.

9/2/12 "Bumbershoot". Fountain Lawn Stage. Seattle Center Grounds. Seattle, WA (60 min)
Attendance: 4,000
Supporting: Blitzen Trapper
Supported By: Fruit Bats, The Jezabels, Niki & the Dove, Gold Leaves
Set: Slipping Away, Poisoned Water, You Got it, Suck You Dry, I Like it Small, In 'N' Out of Grace, Judgment Rage..., No One Has, Sweet Young Thing, Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, I'm Now, The Widow of Nain, Song of Joy, Chardonnay, Tales of Terror (w/Dazed and Confused, A Love Supreme), Hate the Police, Fix Me
Notes: This was the 6:45pm "main show" at Bumbershoot that anyone attending Bumbershoot could attend. In a move evoking their 1995 Bumbershoot performace where they shared the stage with Mel Torme, Tony Bennett plays a different stage at Bumbershoot this day. After Chardonnay, Mark announces that that song is a true story, and holds up a bottle of rosé wine. Guy adds that the flip side to the Chardonnay single will be We Love Rosé. Guy throws some of Led Zeppelin's Dazed and Confused into the breakdown in Tales of Terror. When he switches to A Love Supreme, Mark sings along. They finish their set with time to spare, so after a quick huddle decide to add Hate the Police and Fix Me instead of You Stupid Asshole.

9/30/12 Adams Center. Missoula, MT (45 min)
Attendance: 7,000
Supporting: Pearl Jam
Set: Slipping Away, You Got it, Suck You Dry, I Like it Small, In 'N' Out of Grace, Judgment Rage..., Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, I'm Now, Widow of Nain, Song of Joy, Chardonnay, Tales of Terror (w/A Love Supreme)
With Pearl Jam: Kick Out the James (Mark and Steve)
Notes: This show is a benefit for the re-election of Senator John Tester. Near the end of 'Suck You Dry,' Dan drops off the song, and the other guys valiantly carry on, though the song is missing a je ne sais quoi - well, the quoi is Dan. Before 'In N Out of Grace' Mark comments on how long it's taken to play Missoula: "We've been a band for almost 25 years and have never been to Missoula...If Dan hadn't shit his pants on that one tour we would've made it here in 1989." Mark says that 'Song of Joy' is inspired by people like the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson. They hit the end of their scheduled time right as they're starting the breakdown in 'Tales of Terror,' so of course they do as long a breakdown as they've ever done on that song.
