Mudhoney Tourbook, 2022
Tourbook

3/16/22 The Crocodile. Seattle, WA (85 min)
Attendance: 700
Supported By: The Tripwires
Set: When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, Prosperity Gospel, The Farther I Go, Sweet Young Thing, Good Enough, Judgment Rage..., Touch Me I'm Sick, Vortex of Lies, Suck You Dry, Into the Drink, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, 21st Century Pharisees
Encore: Here Comes Sickness, The Lucky Ones, Who You Drivin' Now?, Chardonnay, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain
Notes: This is Mudhoney's first show in two years, and rescheduled from 5/16/20 (and 11/7/20) on account of the coronavirus pandemic. It's been so long that The Crocodile moved in the interim, to 2505 1st Ave (a few blocks NW of their former 2200 2nd Ave location). Dan pulls a double shift, also playing drums in opener The Tripwires. They ease into their return to stage, extending the intro to 'When Tomorrow Hits' to a trancelike state (also, Dan was attending to a few things before he led them into the next part of the song). After 'The Farther I Go,' Mark greets the crowd with reference to the pandemic: "It's nice to see you! ...But maybe a little freaky." It's been long enough that they're not quite sure how many drum taps Dan plays to start off 'Suck You Dry.' Mark suggests it's five (it's eight). Guy goes over to Steve before 'Paranoid Core' to get a refresher on the song, and Steve turns his volume way down and quickly shows him the parts. Like with starting the main set, Steve takes a long, long time on the intro to 'Here Comes Sickness,' with Mark joining in. They start that up before Dan and Guy get back on stage, and keep playing while those guys get situated. They bring back 'Chardonnay,' having played it only once since 2016 (2019 in Walla Walla, in the heart of Washington's wine country). The long layoff from the pandemic is a little weird for the band, and also the crowd, some members of which have gone feral in their time away from other people. Venue staff kick out way more people than you'd expect for a weeknight show with a not-young crowd.

3/17/22 The Crocodile. Seattle, WA (95 min)
Attendance: 750
Supported By: Thee Deception
Set: Here Comes Sickness, Nerve Attack, Inside Job, If I Think, You Got it, By Her Own Hand, Flat out Fucked, Let it Slide, Judgment Rage..., Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, Mudride, Who You Drivin' Now?, Creeps are Everywhere, Prosperity Gospel, Get into Yours, (Paranoid Core), Paranoid Core, Chardonnay, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, One Bad Actor
Encore: When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, The Lucky Ones, I'm Now, 21st Century Pharisees
Notes: This show was originally scheduled for 5/17/20 (and then 11/8/20). Even factoring in the two-year layoff, they bring back some songs they haven't played in a while ('Inside Job,' which they haven't played since 2016, and 'By Her Own Hand' and 'Let it Slide,' which they haven't played since 2018). Last night was 21+ and tonight is all ages, so the crowd is a little less drunk. But it's St. Patrick's Day, so the 21+ part of the crowd is a little more drunk. Things even out and about the same number of people are kicked out both nights for forgetting how to behave in public after two years of the coronavirus pandemic. Before 'Flat out Fucked,' Mark tells the crowd, "This is my newest pedal, and it sounds like an old pedal," then plays a few Superfuzzed notes so everyone can hear. They might've knocked too much rust off by playing a show the previous night - tonight is noticeably sloppier. They're always all playing the same song, just not always the same part of that song. But they plow through with energy, and the crowd doesn't care. They make mistakes all over 'Who You Drivin' Now?,' and the crowd gives them big applause afterward, just the same. They laugh about it and Mark says, "...Thank you?" Speaking of mistakes, they get through a verse and a chorus of 'Paranoid Core' before deciding to stop and restart. Mark makes sure to take a sip of his sauvignon blanc wine before 'Chardonnay,' and says after, "That's probably the only heartfelt song I've ever written." Tom Price (The Monkeywrench, The U-Men) is there watching sidestage (Jim Tillman is also there - it's half a U-Men reunion). He comes out after the main set and tells the crowd, "If you want to hear some more Mudhoney, make some fucking noise!" And the crowd responds appropriately. They go really long on the drum solo / solo for 'In N Out of Grace.' When they leave the stage for the night, Mark shares, "It's good and weird to be back."

4/9/22 The Capitol Theater. Olympia, WA (85 min)
Attendance: 500
Supported By: UK Gold
Set: When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Nerve Attack, You Got it, Prosperity Gospel, The Farther I Go, Sweet Young Thing, Good Enough, Judgment Rage..., Touch Me I'm Sick, Vortex of Lies, Suck You Dry, Into the Drink, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, 21st Century Pharisees, One Bad Actor
Encore: It I Think, Here Comes Sickness, The Lucky Ones, Chardonnay, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain
Notes: Mudhoney plays a show that was originally scheduled for 5/3/20, but for the coronavirus pandemic. It was part of a tour in 2020, and here it's a one-off date. Mark comes on stage first, and as he starts up 'When Tomorrow Hits' before the other guys come out and join in, he warns the cheering crowd, "Don't get your hopes up. It's been a long time, we have no idea what we're doing." There's a little pause before 'I'm Now' and Mark says, "Somebody starts this one, and it's not me." Dan chimes in, "It's me, one two three four..." Someone in the crowd during the encore break is shouting for Mudhoney to "bring it," and there's some onstage confusion about whether the exhortation is that, or to "wing it." Mark: "What was that, Guy? Are we winging it or bringing it? We've got two choices, and we can't do both." Dan says they've been winging it for 34 years. Mark polls the crowd, which cheers louder for bringing it, so that's what they do. Before 'Chardonnay,' Mark makes it clear that the white wine in the cup he's been sipping from all show is a Sauvignon blanc. Then he makes it clear that Steve's cup of a pale yellow liquid contains, "The remnants of my last pee. Steve and I are very close." At least it's not chardonnay.

4/29/22 Revolution Hall. Portland, OR (80 min)
Attendance: 600
Supported By: The Tripwires
Set: When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Nerve Attack, Inside Job, Prosperity Gospel, By Her Own Hand, Flat out Fucked, Judgment Rage..., Good Enough, Touch Me I'm Sick, Vortex of Lies, Suck You Dry, Creeps Are Everywhere, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K./Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, Chardonnay, One Bad Actor
Encore: You Got it, If I Think, Here Comes Sickness
Notes: This show was originally scheduled for 5/15/20 at the Wonder Ballroom with The Minus 5, then rescheduled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Mark addresses that after 'By Her Own Hand:' "This is weird, but cool ... You know why it's weird ... [joking] It's weird that old farts like us are still around." Before 'Chardonnay,' Mark announces, "Hold on, I must take a sip of my delicious Willamette pinot gris. ... Who'd have thought when I went to fucking Linfield [for his first year of college] that they'd make pinot gris like this." Then he talks about what he did drink at college instead of a delicious Willamette pinos gris "...spodie, that's everclear and fruit. It almost fucking killed me three weeks into college." They all start playing different parts of 'Chardonnay,' but Dan holds it together with a solid beat, and they end the song together. Mark laughs about the performance: "That was like the free hardcore version of that."

5/5/22 Off Broadway. St. Louis, MO (90 min)
Supported By: Bassamp and Dano
Soundcheck: Next Time (soundcheck incomplete)
Set: When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Nerve Attack, Inside Job, Hey Neanderfuck, Get into Yours, Sweet Young Thing, Good Enough, Judgment Rage..., Touch Me I'm Sick, Vortex of Lies, Suck You Dry, Prosperity Gospel, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, The Lucky Ones, Chardonnay, 21st Century Pharisees, One Bad Actor
Encore: Into the Drink, Who You Drivin' Now?, You Got It, If I Think, Here Comes Sickness
Notes: This show was newly added as part of rescheduling the 2020 tour due to the coronavirus pandemic. Mark modifies the third verse of 'Touch Me I'm Sick' to, "I'm insane, and I don't mind..." Steve breaks his B string early into 'Prosperity Gospel' and powers through. Afterward, Dan says that when you break a string, "That means you're rockin'." Steve gets a new guitar, noodles on it to make sure it's ready, and asks, "Where are we now? ... [enthusiastically] I'm with you guys!" Mark: "OK, Steve's back!" After "Oh Yeah," Mark talks about the opening act: "Thanks to Bassamp and Dano. Party rockin' good time for American girls and boys," (they'd played Tom Petty's 'American Girl' during their set). Mark gets into some wine talk after 'Chardonnay:' "Damn straight. I will now take a sip of my pinot gris, damn it." So, the crowd joins him, shouting out grapes. Mark says in response, "I had a Riesling with dinner. It was delicious." Dan then says, "He's not against the white wines, just the one." Mark: "Exactly. Did you hear that? Did you hear that?" Mark then hands his mike to Dan, since it was barely audible when Dan first said it, and Dan repeats his line. Mark adds, "Distinctions must be made." Someone in the crowd yells out, "No red wine?" Mark: "Maybe not norton. Oooh! Harsh for Missouri. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to insult the Missouri wine industry. Maybe I did, I don't know. Stick to beer, much better at beer." They leave the stage after the main set with Mark saying, "Thank you very much. Thanks for coming out. Good to see you again. The gap wasn't quite as long as last time," (there was a 20-year gap between their two previous shows in St. Louis - 1999-2019 - a fact that had been pointedly made to them by St. Louis fans previously). They come back out for the encore, and Mark is talking more wine: "Thanks very much. And I'm terribly sorry. I feel bad if I offended any Missouri winemakers that might be among us tonight." Steve says to Dan, who's still adjusting his drums, "You're on the clock man." Mark adds, "Dan's wrestling with himself." Some girls up front yell for Dan to come wrestle with them. Guy replies to them, "You would kick his ass."

Encore: Into the Drink, Who You Drivin' Now?, You Got It, If I Think, Here Comes Sickness
Notes: This show was newly added as part of rescheduling the 2020 tour due to the coronavirus pandemic. It's a solid performance from the band, having fully shaken off any covid-layoff rust by now. The crowd is excited, and there's a few drunken idiots in the mix (chanting for "Lukin" to Guy, or shouting for 'Freebird' all night), and a few ago meatheads. After 'Oh Yeah,' Mark says, "It's great being in a room with a bunch of people who are clearly friends of rock and roll." Then, before '21st Century Pharisees,' he says, "As you can probably tell, we've been woodshedding for the past 2 1/2 years. Super tight. Better than ever. So good that we're proud you can witness this." When they get back for the encore, there's a request for 'Make it Now' (this is a different requestor than the 'Freebird' guy), and Steve nicely says, "Oh, we haven't played that one for years." Steve gives 'Here Comes Sickness' an extended intro so Dan can rehydrate. They close with Mark telling the crowd, "I want to thank you all very much. It's great to see you again if you've seen us before. And it's great to see you for the first time if you've never seen us before."

5/8/22 Southgate House. Newport, KY (90 min)
Supported By: Blunt Blades
Soundcheck: Mudride, (Prosperity Gospel), (Next Time)
Set: When Tomorrow Hits/In 'N' Out of Grace, Nerve Attack, Suck You Dry, Prosperity Gospel/(Real Cool Time), By Her Own Hand, Flat out Fucked, Good Enough, Judgment Rage..., Touch Me I'm Sick, Mudride, Get into Yours, Creeps are Everywhere, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, Chardonnay, 21st Century Pharisees, One Bad Actor
Encore: Into the Drink, Who You Drivin' Now?, You Got It, If I Think, Here Comes Sickness
Notes: This show was newly added as part of rescheduling the 2020 tour due to the coronavirus pandemic. The venue is a former church (see also
11/16/19 Yakima, WA). The guys watch Blunt Blades' set, and they close with a long cover that combines the Stooges' 'We will Fall' and 'Real Cool Time.' Perhaps inspired by that, Mark sings a few lines of 'Real Cool Time' toward the end of 'Prosperity Gospel' ("Can I come over tonight?" x2 / "We will have a real cool time tonight" x2). After 'By Her Own Hand,' one of two teenagers up front shuts, "You rocked my friend's world, thank you!" Mark: "What? [girl repeats, then bemused and amused] Okay?!" Steve doesn't come in for 'Mudride' at the appointed time, so Mark razzes him: "You messed it up" while continuing to play. After 'Oh Yeah,' Mark says, "We're on the good side of the river right? I don't mean to stir up controversy here. Not to breed any hate between Cincinnati and Newport. Is there any? I don't know. Probably not. It's kinda like Vancouver, Washington and Portland, Oregon. The racists live in Vancouver, and uh, I don't know, free hippy people live in Portland." Steve laughs and points to himself since he lives in Portland. Mark adds "And the racists don't live in Portland like the free hippy people." After 'I'm Now,' Mark says about Dan, "He starts this next one. So we have to wait for him to do whatever he's doing. I think he's having a meltdown." Later, Mark says "This next song is called 21st Century Pharisees and it's about the Pharisees who are living in the 21st century. Simple concept." Before 'One Bad Actor,' Mark says "This next song has an Osmonds reference ('one bad actor/apple don't spoil the whole bunch, girl'). So perhaps you're old enough to catch that." After the song, Mark says "Thank you very much for coming out this evening. Sunday night, everything else is closed. What else you gonna do? Thanks to Blunt Blades. Never, ever heard anyone attempt 'We Will Fall,' that was beautiful. Alright. Thank you." Then they leave the stage with him saying, "Okay, thanks again. Thank you all very much. Thanks to Blunt Blades. Alright."

With Mark being unable to play in New Orleans a few days previously, and those shows in California in February 1989 they cancelled when Dan got pneumonia, that makes four health-related cancellations in 34 years for them. Not exactly a Morrissey-level rate of cancelling shows.

Mudhoney learned this toward the end of their set, so called some audibles, and added 'Who You Drivin' Now?,' 'Here Comes Sickness,' and 'Mudride.' They start out playing a little faster than intended, and roll with it, speeding through their entire set this night. After 'Oh Yeah,' Mark tries to elegantly move his guitar stand out of the way for some songs where he only sings, but mildly muffs it: "I used to be so good at that. After two years, I'm so out of practice." After 'Chardonnay,' Mark comments on the wine: "Chardonnay is terrible, and apparently Guy's beer is terrible as well. *rimshot* These are the things we endure..." They come out for the encore, and as Guy toddles around, Mark says, "This is a new one Guy wrote and it goes like this." Eight quick drum taps from Dan later they're playing 'Suck You Dry.'

That show was fraught with technical difficulties. Dan's in-ear monitors died during soundcheck so he switched to old school monitors for the show and that crapped out twice during the show so there were two long lulls while the drum monitor got replaced. My guitar kept cutting out and we didn't figure out the issue until about 1/4 into the set. Steve had two broken string events. Despite all of that, it was a fun show.

"I've had a nasty cold for several days and my voice has been barely a croak since yesterday, so we asked The Drove to add 15 minutes and we cut 15 off of our set. The odd thing is that I can hit the screaming higher pitched stuff but the actual 'singing' is difficult. There was a local opener tonight Hook, Line and Sinker, which are a pretty decent Kyuss influenced act."
