ACN Volume X, issue 2 October 2003 Editor in chief: Gaius Stern Last issue R. Hentzel was the only person who noted that the date read Sept. 2002 rather than 2003. Perhaps the ACN should start awarding extra bonus points to subscribers who catch all my errors. If you want to be added or removed from the subscriber list, just write me back and let me know This issue contains events calendar results from Grinnell Invitation to Colorato Univ Trivia Bowl short buzzer additions ----------------- Fall and Winter Events scheduled: October *** USC is postponing their Ghetto War until Spring 11 Oklahoma Rt 66 Iowa http://www.uiowa.edu/~quizbowl/tournaments/index.html 18 UC Berkeley WIT X November 1 ACF (Stanford and other sites) 1 DePauw Univ (NAQT style) dpuducks@yahoo.com 7 Caltech Technophobia & TRASH Regional 8 KILT Bowl I Monmouth College, IL Iowa State Fall Tournament II Wash St Louis Gateway Invit. 9 TRASH Regional, Iowa State, Wash Univ SL 15 Illinois Open 2003 msorice@uiuc.edu Colorado Univ Trivia Bowl January 31 Truman State Univ "Brainal Leakage ... Illinois Wesleyan University drove home with the third place Cow trophy. Apparently the trophies all had cows on them. This was the first college quizbowl Grinnell has produced. Check the Grinnell webpage to see if full stats are yet available. http://web.grinnell.edu/groups/quizbowl/ COLORADO TRIVIA BOWL The CU Trivia Bowl for 2003 will be sponsored by the Circle K International Club on the Boulder campus, and will be conducted using the Testing Recall About Strange Happenings (T.R.A.S.H) format, utilizing the November 2003 regional qualification package of questions. Info is at http://home.comcast.net/~triviabowl. Also contact Paul Format is pop culture trivia - film, music, sports, television, and misc. After expenses, entry fee funds will be given to charity - possibly Boulder Head Start, Colorado Child Passenger Safety, Children's Hospital, or some similar area children's entity. One or more teams will be selected from this competition for bids to the T.R.A.S.H. national competition in Spring 2004. Saturday, November 15th will feature round-robin qualification rounds where teams will be able to select an early afternoon, late afternoon, early evening, or late evening session. Each team will play a minimum of 3 games HIGH SCHOOL CONTEST MASTERLIST Matt Weiner provides a masterlist of HS events on his website hsquizbowl.org where you can check to see if an event is scheduled in your area. He also has a column which explains the different HS national tournaments, very useful for longterm planning. TWO MORE BUZZERS TO ADD TO MASTERLIST In January the ACN will rerun the buzzer list as a full issue in itself. In the meantime, one can check out two new systems. The SHOW ME SMART company sent me a new link (which did not work when I tried it) to their system, so just try http://www.able2products.com and prowl around. The buzzers are a chain. Each player uses a "pistol grip" thumb activated hand held unit. The system auto-clears (not the best). Shawn Pickrell says they are very rugged, but more expensive in the past few years. In 1997 they were about $500 for 16 players. Zeecraft sent me a flier in the mail which says they now have a wireless system. If you currently use a Gordian Knot (Quizwizard II), you will understand the appeal of a wireless buzzer. Call them at 1-800-662-7475 to ask about it or consult www.zeecraft.com. ACF SUBMISSION DEADLINE APPROACHING (from Kelly MacKenzie) The final two deadlines are quickly approaching to submit ACF packets on October 10 and 17. As already detailed in the initial announcements for the tournament, teams that are required to submit a round must do so by October 17 to be eligible to play. I want to reiterate here that I will be holding all teams to this, so don't think that you can give me a packet a week late or whenever you feel like it just because you're one of the cool kids to whom deadlines don't apply. Programs not submitting packets by the October 17 deadline will either not be able to play or will have to pay.
