Academic Competition Newsletter Volume X Issue 3 Editor Gaius Stern 22 Jan 2004 I expect there will only be two or three more issues this year, down from the usual eight. For those who find it more efficient to send the ACN to a club maillist rather than to several individuals, feel free to change the recipient address, by dropping me an e-mail and including the appropriate new address. Illinois Open Chicago A, Michigan A, Kentucky CAL Berkeley and the WIT This year Berkeley has acquired a number of new players to rejuvenate a nearly depleted club. One major concern (extinction) has disappeared, but the club has a serious concern remaining. Why is attendence at WIT so low? In the first few years when there were fewer teams in the West, the WIT attracted 10-11 visiting teams and entered 3-4 teams of Berk undergrads for a regular total of 14. This year and in recent years, attendence has barely reached 11 with 4 teams often from CAL. Berkeley now would like to hear from teams who are in CA but choose not to play at WIT why this is. Is it distance? type of questions? personalities? expense? timing? WIT and Cardinal Classic are the two oldest contests in CA. The Berkeley club would like to see WIT return to its former days of glory when it was regarded as a FUN contest, capapble of attracting a large field including teams from out of state. Eok Ngo on Jeopardy! The ACN wishes to congratulate Eok (Berk) for his 27 Aug taping of Jeopardy, televized in November (?) on a date other than the one they told him. While Eok did not win a lot of money, he did laud quizbowl to the skies, protest every time they ruled his response incorrect, and demand a bonus question three times. He also invited Alex Trebek to face him in a one-on-one at the next CAL individuals tournament. Trebek's reply is unknown. Old but useful site to be updated It would be useful if a torunament result site such as the one at http://tourcenter.tripod.com/tourresults.html were updated and advertised on Yahoo for all to see. That is all. Gaius
