This issue contains BYU PM5 results ACF Regionals info Stanford CC8 results Website info Invitation to Wichita State Upcoming events ------------------ Brigham Young University hosted the Perpetual Motion V tournament the last weekend of January in a two day event with a double RR of play. This year the participants were Berkeley, Cal Tech-UCLA, Utah, Wichita State, BYU 1-4, and R. Hentzel ("Sterile Dread"). The BYU PM is the oldest tournament in the Rockies and is so named because of the ample number fo rounds. Most years BYU trades with other tournaments the same weekend to acquire as more rounds than are needed. This year there was a tie between "City of Berkeley" and "Escape from LA" - a conglamerate team from Cal Tech and UCLA both 11-3. Sterile Dread was third 10-4. Congratulations to Philip, David L, Raja, and Fred from Berkeley and Pat, Richard, Oz and Mary-Beth from LA. As always, the BYU team displayed excellent hospitality (free ride to and from SLC, free lodging, free videogames, free James Bond). The top five players were R Hentzel (Sterile Dread) 92.5 PPG Ken (BYU Nephi 60.36 Nephi (BYU A) 37.5 Phil (City of Berk) 34.64 Patrick (Escape fr LA) 30.00 Special mention for #8 allstar Eric (Wichita STate) 34-0 with no -5s. March 14, 1998. The tournament will again use a modified ACF format, and will again feature the Thumbs on Ice Buzzer Revue, an individual lightning round competition in which all participants will compete. In addition, TEAMS FROM OUTSIDE THE CENTRAL TIME ZONE WILL PLAY FOR FREE! Teams wishing to take us up on this offer will notice that the Wichita airport does not have any discount carriers at this time; we may be able to transport teams to and from the airports at Kansas City or Oklahoma City with enough notice. Early response is recommended! For teams in the central time zone, note that the submission of a question packet is not required, but if you choose to submit a packet it must be received by February 25, and it must contain 25 tossups and 25 boni distributed according to the official WSUACC question writing guidelines, available on-line at: http://www.feist.com/~briareus/wsuacc/ For more information, contact Eric Owens or go to the Website. ACF Regionals set for End of Feb and Early March As usually happens, ACF Regionals will stagger two weekends since some Regions prefer 28 Feb and others 7 March. For this reason, please wait until the last Regional is over before discussing the content of questions with any players in the West (where the date is 7 March). Contact the individual host to determine which weekend your site will use if you are not certain. This year there will be 6 ACF Regional sites at the following: Region: Site local TD Mid-Atlantic Maryland, College Park David Hamilton Great Lakes U. Chicago John Sheahan West Berkeley Jason Hong & Gaius Stern South West U. Oklahoma Eric Bell Southeast Georgia Tech Long Nguyen Northeast Yale Samer Ismail There is still room to play in ACF Regionals. As before, traditional untimed ACF rules will be employed. Discounts exist for teams bringing buzzer systems, and volunteer staff. Further information is available at http://www.inform.umd.edu/StudentOrg/maqt/acf/Welcome.html Using the Web to acquire publicity and recruits By now, many QB clubs have a Website. This is an excellent means to attract new players and to advertise your events and membership to otehr schools. For incoming freshmen, it is helpful to include keywords which will pop up on search engines such as "Quizbowl," "Academic Competition," etc. When designing a website, it is valuable to keep this in mind. Also highly descriptive or impressive websites which explain all of the club's activities and include a phone numebr contact are a must. Some websites also have gimmicks or lexicons on their pages to attract players and outside attention. The following QB clubs in the West, SW, and Plains have Websites: Berkeley, Caltech, Stanford, UT Dallas, Rice, UT Austin, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Texas A&M, Iowa State, St Thomas (Tx), ?Weber State. Apologies in advance to anyone left off this list. The BYU page has been down for sometime. I do not know if a new page has been put up or not, but Earl Cahill will know the answer.
