Academic Competition Newsletter Vol. VI issue 4 editors: Eric Owens and Gaius Stern Dec. 1999/Jan. 2000 Welcome to the fourth issue of the sixth year of the Academic Competition Newsletter. The primary mission of the newsletter is to spread information about QB to new players and schools. To get a free subscription (or drop it), just write the editors and ask to be (un)subscribed. When posting questions or gripes, however, please write only to the editors and not to the entire subscription list. The newsletter will endeavor to report fully on all QB events for teams West of the Mississippi or of interest to those teams, continuing the earlier policy to extend coverage towards the Midwest. As always, subscribers are encouraged to write the newsletter editors with columns, tournament invitations, opinions, corrections, and especially tournament results. This year's head editor is David Hamilton. Teams will not be required to submit a packet this year. However, there will be a significant discount for each team that submits a packet which is considered to be of acceptable quality. However, in order to submit a packet, you had to notify David Hamilton by December 26. We urge all teams to read John Sheahan's thorough and insightful Question Writing Supplement for the 1998 ACF National Tournament. The directors of the 2000 Championship adopt this document in its entirety. The Sheahan guidelines can be at the ACF website at http://www.inform.umd.edu/Studentorg/maqt/acf/Welcome. html. Teams should also read the new ACF Formatting Guidelines, or they will be returned for resubmission. Packets are required to follow these guidelines. Please direct any questions or concerns to David Hamilton at . CAL BERKELEY CERTAMEN IV BRINGS 30 TEAMS The Berkeley Academic Club ran their fourth certamen in Dec 1999 and drew thirty HS Latin teams, mostly from the Bay Area and five from Los Angeles. Teams played according to their year of Latin and all were encouraged to come attend the HS Quizbowl scheduled in January for new teams. The cycle of winners previously limited to Menlo and Bentley was largely broken when Miramonte HS won their first ever 1st place, after placing fourth in the prelims. Monte Vista took both 2 and 3 on level one, though this is a new program. The Los Angeles team from Milken HS (named for the bond baron) won the Upper Division and earned quite a reputation for themselves. It is the hope of the Berkeley Academic Club to combine the certamen and quizbowl students to create a larger draw at future Bay Area quizbowl events. CREATIVE ELECTRONICS RAISES PRICE FOR QUIZWIZARDS The price for the infamous Gordian knot 16 person buzzer systems jumped on 1 January according to the CE website c-e-d-inc.com. In the past year the company has allowed a group discount rate for anyone who mentioned the newsletter or Gaius Stern in communications. It is unclear whether this discount will continue, but at the end of Spring, the newsletter will endeavor to arrange another purchase of 5 or more systems if there is a demand. NAQT TO START OWN NEWSLETTER NAQT is starting a newsletter of their own. Submissions and subscriptions can be made through contact with the editor Fred Carpenter at . Next month: more info on all regionals tournaments and more tournament announcements. Until then, Gaius & Eric
