Academic Competition Newsletter Vol. VI issue 5 editors: Eric Owens and Gaius Stern Feb. 2000 Welcome to the fifth issue of the sixth year of the Academic Competition Newsletter. The primary mission of the newsletter is to spread information about QB to new players and schools. To get a free subscription (or drop it), just write the editors and ask to be (un)subscribed. When posting questions or gripes, however, please write only to the editors and not to the entire subscription list. The newsletter will endeavor to report fully on all QB events for teams West of the Mississippi or of interest to those teams, continuing the earlier policy to extend coverage towards the Midwest. As always, subscribers are encouraged to write the newsletter editors with columns, tournament invitations, opinions, corrections, and especially tournament results. UCR SCRIMMAGE RESULTS UCR hosted a scrimmage on January 29. Teams played a full round robin, followed by a playoff among the top three teams. Both UCLA teams had to leave early, and then UCI and UCR played three "whatever" scrimmage games that saw UCR take 2/3 for fourth. Final standings were as follows: 1. Oxy/Scripps 2. Harvey Mudd 3. UCI/Scripps 4. UCR 5. UCI 6. UCLA I 7. UCLA II NORTHWESTERN WINS QUACK In the snowy bluff covered hills in Quincy, IL, QUACK VIII was held on Jan. 29. The 7 teams that came were joined by a 2-player team from Quincy. There was a round robin with all the teams and then the teams were split into an upper division of 4 and a lower division of 4. The team results are as follows: Northwestern 10 1 UM-Rolla 6 5 Wisconsin 7 4 Oklahoma 6 5 Depauw A 7 3 Depauw B 3 7 Quincy 2 8 Wichita St. 1 9 Leading scorers: Paul Nelson, Rolla, 58.64; Rose, Depauw A, 47.00; Jonathan Tanner, Oklahoma, 38.00; Adam Engelhart, Wisconsin, 37.00. CALTECH WINS UCSB JUNIOR BIRD The first-ever quizbowl event in Santa Barbara, California is in the books, as UCSB held its first (hopefully annual) Jr. Bird tournament, on January 30. Five teams played: Scripps, Caltech, Occidental, and Harvey Mudd, plus a team of UCSB's own freshmen. Caltech took the team prize, while Wesley Mathews, the one-man team from Occidental, won the individual contest. All four visiting teams had a representative in the top 4: Player Team TO INT 1 Wesley Occidental 76 0 2 Kevin Caltech 32 11 3 `Dulcinea' Scripps 28 4 4 Keith Harvey Mudd 26 6 CHICAGO WINS STANFORD CARDINAL CLASSIC X Cardinal Classic X was held February 4th and 5th at Stanford University. Eleven teams attended, and played a full round robin, then split into divisions of 6 and 5 and played mini round robins within each division. Congratulations to the University of Chicago for winning the tournament with a 14-1 record, losing only to Caltech A. Berkeley A and Team X, a "masters" team, tied for second with records of 11-3, splitting their two games with each other, while Caltech finished fourth. Andrew Yaphe (Chicago,99 P/20TU) was tournament MVP, followed by Richard Mason (Caltech A,50 P/20TU), Nick Meyer (UCB-A,40 P/20TU), and Phil Huang (X,39 P/20TU) in individual scoring. Full results and statistics will be available at: http://www.stanford.edu/group/CollegeBowl/ccx.html. COLLEGE BOWL IN CHAPTER 11 Sources close to the newsletter confirm that the College Bowl Company, Incorporated is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Reports are that this action will have no bearing on CBI activities for 2000 or 2001. The newsletter will continue to follow this story and will provide more information as it becomes available. CARLETON TO HOST CUT2 Any player or school which might be interested in attending CUT2, the 2nd annual Carleton Undergraduate Tournament, on March 4, 2000 in scenic Northfield, Minnesota, should view the full announcement at: http://www.student.carleton.edu/orgs/quizteam/CUT2.htm l. No question submission is required. All players must be undergraduates. Registration lines are now open. BYU TO HOST PERPETUAL MOTION VIII The eighth annual Perpetual Motion tournament will be held at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, during the weekend of March 10-11. The round-robin regular tournament will be followed by an informal trash tournament, as in years past, and we are also planning to mirror (with Mike Burger's blessing) the famous game-show round from the Ann B. Davis trash tournament. As in years past, this tournament is COMPLETELY FREE, and, as past attendees will attest, a good time should be had by all. Round-trip air fares from L.A. and the Bay Area are as low as $150 that weekend, so we hope all the usual suspects and even some new teams will be able to make it. Details, as they become available, will be posted at http://www.math.byu.edu/~cahille/collegebowl/pmviii.ht ml. Hope to see you there. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA QUIZBOWL COLUMN (courtesy Willie Chen, UC Irvine) UC Irvine has just held a tournament on 1/22. We divided the field into two divisions: 1. College JV & High School Varsity 2. High School JV. Division play resulted in balanced scoring and competitive matches. Congratulations to Torrey Pines High School for winning Division I and Palos Verdes Peninsula High School for winning Division II. I've also noticed a strong emergence of college-level teams. Aside from the older circuit teams from USC, Caltech, UCLA (who are endowed with experienced grad students), in the last few years I saw the formation of college bowl clubs from UCSB, UCR, UCI, Occidental, Harvey Mudd, Scripps, and a few other CBI schools. While we the young ones cannot compete with the big guys yet (especially Berkeley and Stanford), I do find junior bird tournaments fulfilling because we Division II college teams are very evenly matched with the top high school teams in Southern California (namely, Torey Pines, Edison, Hart, and Palos Verdes Peninsula). Quiz Bowl in So Cal promises to grow stronger and, hopefully in the near future, we can start producing "home grown" teams that can compete at the national level. BERKELEY CLUB RUNS A JUNIOR QUIZBOWL In order to give HS players more opportunity to play, the Berkeley Quizbowl club ran a Junior quizbowl, "The Golden Bear Cub Classic" on 29 Jan 2000 for new teams. Two ringer teams and 8 novice teams competed. The ringers came in 1st and second, but everyone had a lot of fun. We used standard college format of 20 TUs and boni. The kids were very excited at the cvhance to play so many games (RR of 9) in one day. Most had only experienced the Chip Beale-format BAAC which is nearly an embarassment, given that only 4 rooms play at a time in a double elim event. The event was well organized thanks to Mike Usher, consuls Andy and Steve, and volunteers R. Hentzel, Jeff Goode, Jon Pennington, and others too numerous to mention (but equally deserving of praise). "The fact that most of the Berkeley Club came out to help sent a message to all the coaches that we are solidly behind this activity and pushing for its success," said TD Andy Penner. A FEW QB SITES WORTH MENTIONING The editors wish to mention a few specific quiz-bowl related items on the internet. The Berkeley tournament record archive is located at: http://guir.cs.berkeley.edu/quiz-bowl/resources/stats. Richard Hurst also has a tournament results archive at: http://members.tripod.com/~hurstrh/tlist.htm. The Canadian Academic Quiz League (CAQL) has a new website http://caql.org. CAQL is a loosely organized group that organizes and promotes academic competitions among post-secondary educational institutions in Canada. Finally, there is a website with a good deal of Region 14 history, operated by Sean Cole, at: gladstone.uoregon.edu/~sac27633. SPREADING THE WORD AT CBI REGIONALS The editors wish to take this opportunity to remind our readers of the importance of spreading the word about the circuit at the upcoming CBI regional tournaments. For many teams, this is the only intercollegiate tournament that they will play all year. As such, this is the best opportunity to draw these teams onto the circuit. Just imagine how the circuit could be different five years from now if every team still playing CBI had recruited a new school onto the circuit. The long term result is more opportunities to play, a more competitive circuit, and a higher level of play. The editors strongly encourage its subscribers to spread the word at regionals. Next month: results of NAQT Sectionals, CBI Regionals, and ACF Regionals; and invites to Iowa and Wichita State. Until then, Eric & Gaius
